Perhaps it's just me, but I admit the vertical arrangement of the warbird doesn't work as well as the classic horizontal version. Something about it has always seemed off. Anyone else feel this way?

Agreed. The horizontal arrangement works better for positioning on a widescreen/TV set.
Now, a physical model by Fanhome or so would be a great way to display the vertical arrangement and make it look right.

I suspect it doesn't sit well with a lot of people because we always expect Romulans (and Klingons, for that matter) to field starships that strongly resemble actual birds. That one in particular has a bird-like head and beak, and possesses the wing-decorated motif on the main body, but the fact that it's vertically aligned violates our collective expectations of what an avian aesthetic should look like.

I kind of wish that it was a full-on Aelignne; its sheer size would make any adversary shit their pants upon first sight, but it would have been way too much of an overpowering member of Lacarno's fleet and likely would have survived a capture attempt and wound up smearing his little ship into atoms to begin with.

I like to think that both the massive Aelignne-style exists as well as the little pocket warbird Kiith.

But yeah, what you say sounds reasonable - it looks like a bird with the wings stuck on wrong.
