So, anyone here ready to declare this the best Star Trek film yet?

I'm not sure I can accurately rate it on only one viewing. The more I think about it, the more some things bug me.

For now:

1. The Undiscovered Country
2. First Contact
3. Nemesis
4. Star Trek
5. The Voyage Home
6. Generations
7. Insurrection
8. The Wrath of Khan
9. The Search For Spock
10. The Motion Picture
11. The Final Frontier

It's in the top half. I think I may rank First Contact and TWOK, and TVH as a little better.

As of this moment it's my favorite - and yeah, it may well be the best. It is certainly the most ambitious Star Trek film ever, with the greatest scope as a movie; TMP doesn't approach it.

I'll decide with another viewing or two whether I have to hold on to any favoritism for TWOK out of sentimentality.

1. Wrath of Khan
2. First Contact
3. Star Trek
4. Voyage Home
5. Undiscovered Country
6. Search For Spock
7. Nemesis
8. Generations
9. Insurrection
10. Final Frontier
11. Motion Picture

I don't even really have to rank them beyond TWOK, TMP and this one - charming as "First Contact" is, it's definitely second-tier and no other Trek film comes close to those three.

Oh, and the whole Shatner thing - what the hell would they have done with another version of Jim Kirk in this movie? No room, and no need.

I agree that there wasn't a real need for him to appear but if he did a cameo during the mind meld would probably have been the time. Something just to show old Spock and old Kirk were good friends.

I am really surprised to see the 1979 movie ranked so high by people

I am sorry but The Motion Picture from 1979 sucked. I hated and despised that bald chick. I am surprised so many people rate it so high up.
It was the first movie I saw without parental accompaniment, I was so excited.
It' the ONLY movie in my life when I left the theater with my brother and another friend, and we all agreed it totally sucked. And it still does. Honestly it's the worst movie I have ever paid to watch. And I was in a really good mood that night, that was until after the movie.

As far as I am concerned it's going to be impossible for them to make a worse Star Trek movie than that.

First Contact is my favorite right now, we will see how ST09 stacks up against it.

First Contact is my favorite of the Roddenberry/Berman-era films.

Just-plain-ol' Star Trek blasts First Contact out of the mother :censored: ing water.

It's the first real Trek movie, as opposed to just another TV episode writ large.

This latest film was easily the most genuinely fun of all eleven Trek features. I enjoyed the film, but it is nowhere near the top slot in my list of favorite Trek films.

It's up there now because I haven't seen it umpteen times like the other films.

I certainly think it's better than the TNG films and Star Trek V.

Its only competition is STII. Its easily less flawed than STFC.

My rankings:

1. Star Trek
2. STII
3. STFC
4. STIV
5. STNEM
6. STTMP
7. STVI
8. ST III
9. ST INS
10. STGEN
11. STV

Saw it tonight....it was pretty bad. I can accept the recasting of the characters, actually thought Chris Pine as Kirk was pretty good....and the story had potential, but actual product was just disappointing. I hope this makes money, and I hope it breaths more life into the franchise....but this is not a very good movie.

This movie and its potential sequels are really the only good reasons for the Trek movie franchise to exist, now - and TV shows based on this would almost certainly be disappointments unless they were massively more sophisticated than modern Trek was.

I haven't seen the movie yet, I'll see it tomorrow night, so the following is a "blind declaration": I think it's going to be better than any of the TNG movies. I think it's going to be better than TSFS and TFF, the weakest TOS entries. I think it'll be better than TVH and TUC, which I thought were great way back when but have dated for different reasons.

All that leaves is TMP and TWOK. TMP, TWOK, and this movie are each so different from each other.

I've read a lot of reviews, including Ebert's, and I suspect I'll think TWOK will have more to its story but ST 2009 will be fun to watch and will be more dynamic.

Let the flaming begin...

1.) Star Trek
2.) Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
3.) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
4.) Star Trek: First Contact
5.) Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
6.) Star Trek: Insurrection
7.) Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
8.) Star Trek: Generations
9.) Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
10.) Star Trek: The Motion Picture
11.) Star Trek: Nemesis

When the opening title came up, I sent a text message to buddy of mine with the following message:

"First five minutes of STAR TREK > Star Trek: Nemesis"

And if I could just add this - Karl Urban was my favorite actor in the movie. McCoy was the character I was looking forward to seeing the most and he really did one hell of a job with the part.

It was the best of Treks, it was the worst of Treks. It was a tale, told by some idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

But it was fun and it was charming.

I'd predicted that it would be a dumb (but not, I trusted, quite as dumb as, say, Star Wars, which I love) summer action film. But, done well, I could live with that--it's not the ideal, but I could live it.

So now that I've seen it, I find my prediction was spot-on: actually, it may well be a little dumber than Star Wars--the middle four, at least. But, as an example of a fun, dumb action flick, it's quite good and I enjoyed it--the best of Treks, if you will. As an example of Star Trek, it is awful, just awful, the worst of Treks, one might say. My colleague, another teacher where I work and a casual fan of the 24th century stuff primarily, absolutely loved it, however, and it cast a very pleasant penumbra over the drinks afterward.

It ain't Star Trek, though. In its own way, it is as much of a parody as Galaxy Quest. I like Galaxy Quest, but that ain't Star Trek, either.
