I have no idea what you're talking about and am perfectly content to remain that way.

We disagree. I think Smash isn't nearly musical enough. I want some of the angsty sidebar romances and such replaced with music, doesn't necessarily have to be pop music, although as long as they pick good songs, I'm all for that. But the way they have tended to botch their attempts at pop music is pretty much what my post was about. It doesn't have to be that way though -- if Glee can pull it off, I think Smash can too. However, it's going to take more musical creativity than what they've shown so far.I think they should be a show about a musical, but not try to be a musical. The songs from the musical that they perform tend to be pretty good - I could see them being in a real musical. But when they try to do some pop song, ech. It usually doesn't work. Part of the reason is probably my general contempt for popular music. It all just sounds like junk to me.

Actually, Smash is more like Glee - with the annoying relationship storylines - than not, except Smash lacks the one thing that makes Glee watchable; the great musical presentations. That's a good point. Except for the songs from the actual musical, songs are just tossed into the mix because they need X number of songs per episode, not because it makes any damn sense in the story, or because the story demands a song right at that point.
It might be asking too much to have a sensibly constructed musical every week - the pace is probably just too much. It must take a lot of talent and effort to create original songs that sound good, and also emerge naturally from the narrative.
And if I wanted Glee, I would watch Glee. Which I don't. I hope they don't turn this show into that because that would be the end of me watching this show.![]()
Anyway, it's obvious they gotta do something, and next fall, I expect there will be significant changes. I hope the changes are that they ditch pretty much everything other than the characters working on the musical because the parts that lag always seem to be the personal-story elements.
So they should have songs from the actual musical, and if they insist, songs about working on a musical. No more adoption or infidelity dramas, and Tom's boring boyfriend needs to get a lot more interesting, fast.
