Smart Car

I was googling for some examples of parking places where a Smart might be advantageous when I came across this:

Driving a Smart is less embarrassing than "driving" a Porsche in a traffic jam or trying to get into a small parking space with an SUV.

I can get my SUV into any space. If you can't do that you shouldn't be driving it.

Me too.

That's because your parking spaces are enormous. They have to be, to accommodate the tanks some of you drive. You would never, ever, get an American SUV parked along my road, regardless of driving skill. I doubt it would fit down the road, let alone park on it.
What I don't get is the need to attack other people's car choices in repeated threads (what was the last one? My family wouldn't have survived if they were driving a Smart car!). If you don't like em, don't buy one. No-one's forcing you to. But laughing at other people's cars is probably one of the ways you can appear most insecure.

Um, you just attacked the vehicle I drive "the tanks some of you drive". But I'm secure enough not to care. ;)

...so what's the point of driving a manly car?

Maybe some people just aren't concerned with silly stereotypes of what is or isn't a "manly car"?

If you like driving an SUV, whatever, go for it. But why do you feel the need to denigrate other people's choices?

there is a person in Los Lunas that owns a pea green one that he/she has decked out in makeup and other strange decals, next time I see it at wal-mart i'll get a few pics

Honestly, I feel that if anyone should be embarassd by their car it's people who drive large inefficient vehicles, because it shows they don't give a shit about anyone or anything but themselves. To think that people who drive small, efficient vehicles should be embarassed by the fact that their vehicles are small and efficient because it's somehow "manly" to shit up the environment and take up a bunch of space, is patently absurd.

That said, there are better options than the Smart with equivalent or superior mileage, parkability and driveablity. Sure, you might get a Smart into a slightly smaller space than a Yaris or a Mini, but not enough to make a significant difference in one's ability to find parking on a regular basis.

See, I'm more inclined to think they have even smaller dicks than the Hummer people.

I don't think that's physically possible, unless they're women.

Length, not width. You can't get your urban assault vehicles into the same spaces that a mini or a smart can get into on the street. Of course, I imagine neither of you do much street parking. People who drive Smarts, on the other hand, tend to do a lot of that, and they can fit into a space half the length as my Mazda sedan, let alone your Expedition or whatever it is you drive.

Exactly. Small cars make much more sense in urban areas, regardless of whether or not their "manly". If I ever get around to buying a car, it'll probably be something like a Fit or a Mazda 3, as they're both practical and fun while remaining easy to handle in city driving.

Plus, speaking as a pedestrian and a cyclist, there's nothing that makes you feel quite so unwelcome on the road as a giant SUV. And, I don't like to generalize, but more often than not its the people in those vehicles who tend to drive in a way that's more of a threat to me, paying less attention to those of us who are very close to the road and vulnerable. Not that small cars can't be dangerous, too, but I find it occurs much less often.

I think a grown up is able to handle another person's opinion that the car they drive may or may not be attractive. People shouldn't care what others think. Should they?

I have a small car; an '04 Nissan Sentra. I can park that thing anywhere. Also, i checked out the Smart Car at an auto show. No storage space at all, and it's just a two seater. Granted, people that drive these cars aren't gonna go to the store and do their massive grocery shopping, but the lack of any sort of cargo capacity makes this car really impractical. My car gets 31 MPG on the highway, about 27 on the street. That's great for me. And my car has an actual trunk. I also looked at a Mini Cooper, not just the Smart Car but those cars are just too small for me to feel comfortable in. The Smart Car scares me because i have this fear that if i get into an accident, it'll be my tomb. So i'm good having a couple thousand lbs of car around me.

Then why do you seem to care so much about what we think of SUVs?

They're cool commuter cars I guess, but not enough multipurpose utility for me as a main car.

If you want fuel economy and parking, get a motorcycle.

Roads here in Jersey are way too packed with asshole drivers anyway, I'd be terrified of driving a smart car on the highways. I'd get bounced around like a ping pong ball.

So you justify bashing other people's choices because you don't think they should care what you say?

I love smarts cars, i've always wanted one, they're mint. have you seen how fast those bad boys get up hills? they beat all other cars hands down.

Although the new Fiesta does nothing for me, not keen on the aesthetics of the back half. And they seem to have compromised the biggest selling point the Fiesta had in its market - boot space.
