Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

RTD seems to have a template for the companions his eras. First companion: young blond girl (Rose/Ruby). Second companion: non-white woman who actually works in the medical field (Martha, student doctor/Belinda nurse). Also the actress appeared in the previous season as a separate character but still connected to the character (Adeola was Martha's cousin/Mundy Flynn has some sort of connection to Belinda according to the trailers).

So I guess if there is a third season Joy from the Christmas special will be the companion?

Or Anita

I think this is the first we've heard that The Doctor is specifically told by someone to find Belinda Chandra, and that's how they end up together. Which adds another interesting little wrinkle to their relationshiip, since we already know she at least starts out not wanting to travel with the Doctor. I think this was also the first we've heard about Ruby's new love.
I'm curious if something happens to Ruby and her new love interest by the end of the season since they appear to be working for UNIT, but as far as I can remember neither of them are part of the War Between the Land and the Sea cast.

I went with Joy since she was played by an actress who was already well known before her appearance in Doctor Who, making her a more apt comparison with Catherine Tate and Donna.

True but given Donna was alive and well at the end of her appearance and Joy wasn't Anita seemed more likely!

I just realized and double checked on the Tardis wiki just the be sure, that last season was the first season of the current series not to have any Daleks, and from the trailer it looks like we might not be getting them this season either. Which kind of makes me hope we get at least one more season, so we can them, the Cybermen, and maybe one or two other recurring bad guys like the Weeping Angles or the Sontarrans one more time before we go on hiatus again.
If the show ends or Ncuti Gatwa does leave after this season, will he be the only main Doctor never to face off against the Daleks? To be clear I'm not counting any one off or recurring Doctors, only Doctors who were around for least one full season.

I can only count that as a blessing.

If you're criteria means you're not counting Paul McGann, than yes, Gatwa will be the first "main Doctor" to not go against the Daleks. The closest we've had prior would be Davison, who didn't have a Dalek story until very near the end of his run.

Personally, I don't really like the optics on this, the first black main Doctor to not face the Daleks given the whole "you're not truly the Doctor until you face the Daleks" mentality, but I guess an argument can be made that in recent years Daleks were only being brought back just to have Daleks and maybe it's better to wait until there's an actual story demanding they be used.

Bit like Pertwee never facing the Cybermen (but then neither did Eccleston although he did find a head!)

I guess Ncuti isn't going to fight Cybermen either is he?

It just occurred to me Gatwa might be the only Doctor to not have any Dalek connection at all. Even though McGann didn't face Daleks, Daleks are sort of featured in the 96 movie. The War Doctor shared scenes with Daleks. The Fugitive Doctor was in the same episode as Daleks. Even the Fourteenth/Tennant 2.0 had that minisode with The Walking Davros. And hell, if you really want to go into a deep dive, Richard Hurndall had a scene with a Dalek in The Five Doctors and David Bradley did some reenactments of Dalek scenes for An Adventure in Space and Time. Gatwa might very well be the only televised Doctor to not share a scene with any Daleks or have any Daleks even feature in an episode he's in.

McGann's kind of an odd case for me, since he was only a main character onscreen twice, but he's still included as a numbered Doctor, unlike other Doctors like The Fugitive Doctor, or The War Doctor.

To be fair, McGann's Doctor faced a LOT of Daleks in his time - though obviously, that wasn't @The Wormhole's point. Though even via the BF/extended media lens, the Fourteenth would still be, sans Fifteenth if he actually does leave in a secret regeneration, the only real Doctor to definitively never, ever face a Dalek.

The Daleks don't exist after the Time War...
Although as we are apparently in another universe/dimension (Mavity) all bets are off.
