Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

The show's had stops before? Also, I can't imagine the BBC would want to stop it, just maybe the bi-annual hiatus is now an unavoidable part of the making of the show and that's basically what that means.

But I don't believe we're getting a long overhaul or even cancellation. Heck, we're positively not sure for anything,

Yeah, that does sound like he's expecting a break. I had been ignoring the rumors, but this is coming from RTD himself, so it sounds like we won't be getting new Dr. Who for at least a little while after Season 2. I can't imagine it will be for too long though, I don't think BBC has any franchise that has the worldwide reach of Dr. Who, and I can't imagine them leaving it alone for long.
I just hope Season 2 takes thing out on a high note.

It's true, how many other shows were airing in 2005 are still on the air? The list is small, I guarantee.

But enough fretting over the possible future of Doctor Who. What I know is starting this Saturday there will be new episodes running for the next eight weeks and I plan to either enjoy them or bitch about them without worrying over whether or not this is the end.

But maybe I'm the outlier here.
No, I feel the same way.

While I'll miss Dr. Who if we do take a break, I'm not going to be that upset, it had a good run, and there's plenty of other stuff to watch. And I'm in the process of rewatching the last year of Tennant - Whitaker's first year, all of which I've only seen once, and I've never seen Whitaker's last 2 years, so I've got plenty of New Who to watch. And I've only seen a small fraction of the original series, not to mention all of the books, comics, and audio dramas. So even if the new series takes a break, I've got plenty of ways to get a Dr. Who fix if I need one.

You damn well aren't the outlier. Just the loud minority who want to take away our enjoyment of the show. Screw them.

I'm fine if Doctor Who takes a break. The show has felt like a chore I make myself watch for most of the time since Capaldi/Moffat left, with the exception of the 14th Doctor specials but there were only three of those and only one was really good anyway. Based on the last season and the (increasingly looking legit ) leaks I am up for Doctor Who going to a long break and hopefully coming back with a brand new showrunner who actually wants to make Doctor Who and not just run it as a mediocre vanity project like Chibnall and RTD have.

Ncuti was never going to stick around for long and I can't imagine RTD didn't know this going in, he isn't an idiot, and I wonder if he gambled that Ncuti + Disney money for a couple of years would propel the show to new heights and make it easier to bring a new Doctor later who would stay longer? If so I wonder if he now regrets not sticking with the original actor? (although there's no guarantee whoever it was wouldn't also be quick to leave the role)

Probably best not to dwell on hypotheticals or what ifs. What I know is Gatwa has delivered a solid performance as the Doctor and the ten episodes which have aired so far with him (as the lead) are all the better for having him. And while I don't doubt whoever the other actor was could have been just as entertaining, the fact that Gatwa has performed the role so well is enough to justify his casting.

I just want to know who this shocking other actor would have been. Welsh dude who played the bad prime minister? Adrian Lester? (my personal pick) Eddie Izzard? (Please god no, there’s a chap who should have bowed out of the entertainment scene gracefully ten years ago minimum)

You're right. Same with Eccleston, better we got him for 13 episodes than not at all.

I'm looking forward to this upcoming season! The premise sounds fun and Gatwa has been great so far.

I'd like to enjoy this one to the max because it is likely the last new DW for awhile. Hopefully, it goes out with a bang!

IIRC, all they ever said was there was another actor who was nearly cast in the role before they looked at Gatwa, not that they were "shocking" or anything like that.

Wasn't this even brought up the last time you made that claim?

It keeps being mentioned (I haven’t made the claim) that allegedly someone was outright cast, before they Brosnan’d him in favour of Gatwa. Nowhere have I managed to see anyone suggesting precisely who this was — though there are separate grumblings and mutterings that it was the welsh fella. There’s also rumours that Tennant was originally intended to do more, and those episodes were folded into Season One(TM) as well.

They’re not even in the same postcode. Gatwa, with the best will in the world, is basically at Dexter Fletcher level. Might go somewhere with his career, might not. Ecclestone was already a well regarded leading man and character actor, albeit on the local level of Brit stuff.
Even in terms of basic acting range, Gatwa isn’t there yet. Might be one day, but he’s probably not even in the top thirteen or so actors to have got the Tardis key on a purely skill based level, from what we have seen on screen. Some of which may be down to the writing and opportunities for performance, but some of which is also just down to him or his experience level.

So far everything I'm seeing is making me think she's going to be pretty great.

See was good in Boom. It’s also the first time in a while since I have seen members of the fan base start fancying a companion, so I guess nature is healing.
