Any Fellow Stargate Fans Here?

Any Fellow Stargate Fans Here?
Indeed.

I really enjoyed Stargate and all its spinoffs, including Universe.
Even Stargate Infinity and Stargate Origins? :vulcan:;) I'm a huge SG fan, but I won't touch those!

As much as I loved Stargate, I think it would be really difficult to create a new series that captures the feeling and the fun of SG-1. Part of the allure was that it's set in the current-day world, but with the insane tech progression they had over the years (ships, weapons, etc), it's barely connected anymore. At this point, it may as well be a Star Trek reskin.

I think I did start to feel a bit divorced from SG-1 when Prometheus was introduced. There were still plenty of good episodes to come (and Atlantis!), but the introduction of Earth having a spaceship like that, which I don't recall even being particularly foreshadowed, was a real strain on my suspension of disbelief, especially considering that it gets stolen in its first appearance.

Since I actually work in aerospace, seeing Prometheus, Daedalus, and the F-302s being designed, built, tested, and fielded all within a couple years really strained my suspension of disbelief!

It was that even with SG-1 and some planets of the week.

That was half the fun for me!

I guess nothing is perfect.

My wife and I are rewatching JAG and their timelines for commutes in DC traffic are hilariously short.

I think I could have swallowed it more easily if there had been clear alien involvement in the development of the ships versus throwaway, "Oh, this is based on X technology..." lines.

We don't speak of those.

There actually is a brief throwaway reference in an earlier episode to the X-303 project, specifically the deal the SGC negotiated with the Russians means they have to turn its specs over to the Russians. So it didn't come completely out of the blue.

And on that note, a modern Stargate revival is going to have to address the fact that the US doesn't have so cozy relations with Russia or China these days, making it unlikely the three countries would be partners running the Stargate program.

I know the travel times were a big issue with 24 too. A lot of people said if it was realistic, there'd be times where episodes were nothing but people trying to get across town.

24 took a lot of liberties with the whole real time concept in general. Though what always got me was, the clock kept ticking during the commercial breaks, but apparently nothing important happened during them.

I thought the Prometheus was fine as it portrayed Earth as playing catch-up with the other races, and the ship was experimental and a work in progress that was probably rushed out and broke down on them a lot.

If that had been the only Earth ship of the series, it would have been fine, but when they started building bigger and better ships so quickly and began rolling them out like cars on a production line, it did get a bit silly and felt like the writers just wanted new toys to play with.

I thought they were working with the Asgardians to the build the ships, and that was why they always had one on board each of them?

I remember them being on board the ships, but I don't recall how involved in the building of the ships they were supposed to be. It's been a good few years since I last watched SG-1.

AFAIK Prometheus never had an Asgard on board. Daedalus(?) did, but I don't think consistently so? I can't even remember the names of the other ships or whether they were shown to also have Asgard aboard. Perhaps not the Russian ship that was destroyed when the Ori came through the supergate?

I think that was the later ones, like the Daedalus class which used more Asgard technology.

Prometheus was meant as a engineering marvel with Goauld tech supporting Earth understanding.

I liked the conception of it but it's introduction seemed a bit quick.

Daedalus had Hermiod, who did show up consistently throughout Atlantis's second and third seasons. He's gone after that, probably on account of the Asgard becoming extinct in SG-1's finale.

Odyssey had Kvasir, who only showed up two or three times. Otherwise, no the other ships did not have an Asgard aboard, but then most of the others were seen after the extinction of the Asgard.

I quite liked Stargate, and was sorry when it finally faded away. (I’d say it’s its pretty definitely gone for good, especially after the surprisingly weak Origins thing from a few years ago.). It’s funny: I have a severe problem with one of its basic premises (EITHER a whole bunch of our mythologies are based on ancient aliens, OR one or more alien species randomly chose to adopt a bunch of our religious pantheons as personal identities away from Earth. Frankly, either way is dumb), but they somehow managed to run with that and build an imaginative, fun and often quite well-written universe out of that, along with a “comfortable familiarity” level that quite rivals classic Star Trek.

I'm a big fan of Stargate SG-1. I had been enjoying the show already, but I knew that it was for me when they had actual progression of the overall storyline in a clip show. Something else I appreciated is that later episodes acknowledged the events of earlier episodes. Sometimes, this was using a technology that they discovered when it would come in handy. Other times, it was owning up to some of their less popular decisions in episodes like "Citizen Joe."

I highly recommend checking out the DVD extras. Starting at Season 4, they started putting commentaries on practically every episode, and you get a pretty good idea of the process of making a sci-fi show in Vancouver.

Eh, they made a few cracks about the unpopular episodes. Truth be told, considering prior to that the writers actually went ahead and said certain episodes weren't canon when asked why more recent episode contradicted them, I'm not sure they were really "owning up" to anything.

I am a big fan of SG1. And especially of O'Neill, I love his humor! I am reading and SG1 book, and am looking for more of them, although I have read that a lot of them aren't very good.

And I hope that we get a sequel one day, no reboot
