Old Star Trek fans: don't you sometimes get happy just because there are new series?

I still own one. So what's the issue. It still works, still watching things on VHS. My kids know how to use it, and how to rewind. We also stream.

Why ditch a tech just because something newer came along?
This, cubed and doubly so. It's not as if Abel Gance's NAPOLEON----or lots of other non-TREK product---- is or was so easily found in the newer formats. Digression ended.

They do. Some of my Trek and MST3K tapes from the late '90s attest to that.

I remember the times of no Trek at all. TOS was in syndication,,but that was it until TNG.

1987-2005 were high times for Trek, especially the TNG/DS9 and DS9/VOY overlaps. Yes, ENT sucked in some ways, but it got better, and there are some real gems in there.

I never cheer when Trek gets cancelled. Or ends.

I am still holding out hope that SNW can somehow fix the end of ENT. T'Pol or Phlox could still be around. TATV is one of the great glaring wrongs of the franchise. Most of the others have been fixed.

TOS/TAS' abrubt demises on TV were remedied by the TOS movies, and the TOS cast when out on a high after TUC.

TNG went out on a high after All Good Things, but Nemesis was a downer. I thought S3 of Picard sorted that, and the TNG vast went out on the high note they deserved.

I did not think there were any real glaring wrongs as DS9 and VOY ended. S7 was not the best for either, but the finales were satisfying enough for the most part.

S5 of Disco was not the strongest (nor was S3 TOS or S7 TNG), but I thought they put a perfectly acceptable bow on things. Plus, with Academy and S31 (and SNW), that show kinda lives on.

I have hope for more PRO & LD. But S2 of PRO was excellent. IF that is it, I have no complaints on the ending. My only complaint is that it IS an ending. I am pretty comfortable LD will be on the same plane.

I know some folks were really upset about the switch from S2-S3 in PIC and Rios, Agnes, Laris, Elnor, and Soji getting sidelined. And that did hurt a bit for me, especially Laris, but I get it. It did not rise to a Nemesis/TATV level blunder. Maybe because we got another good season (IMHO) after.

Nah, I don't have any emotions when I hear of a new Trek show. I'm kinda over it. The Original Series was and always will be my all time favorite TV show. I'll always enjoy it and watch it. Same with the films.

Funny thing is, it was never more than that to me: my favorite TV show. It wasn't a source of hope for the future, a representation of my group, or a shining beacon of equality. To me, IDIC was a marketing ploy that fans co-opted. The show had value, it was crafted, for the most part, with care and maturity. But it was a fun show that was the perfect mix of adventure, acting and music. As Nimoy often said "lighting in a bottle."

I was apeshit over it, don't get me wrong, and still am. But every series that followed, from TNG on, were simply follow ups, imitations and efforts that didn't reach the same heights for me. They were often very good, sometimes great, but mostly okay to dull. The last ST series I was truly excited to see was TNG - which has aged probably worse than all of them.

So, no, without the original cast and the original format, I don't get excited anymore. I may try them, depending on the premise, but mostly I really don't care either way if Star Trek continues on or finally retires. I don't resent them or deny anyone their right to love any ST series, but I'm not one of those fans who loves or looks forward to a Star Trek show simply because it's a Star Trek Show. I will stick with it if I enjoy it, but I have my own ideas as to what makes a good Star Trek series, and if it doesn't match that internal standard, I move on. Sometimes I'll get cranky at them based on how they interpret TOS for their own needs, but then I work to snap out of it and get a life, as Mr. Shatner once lampooned.
