Old Star Trek fans: don't you sometimes get happy just because there are new series?

So finally, do the old fans feel happy or not?

Yup!
And at that point, it's not Trek that needs the rest but simply the individual.

It's also okay to grow out of things and move on.

Can you see a fan of (pick any televised sport) getting tired it and vocally wanting (same sport) to take a break simply because they're done with it?
Yes

I have.

Not really, I feel many are regressive.instead of progressive like they claim. I am not talking about politics. It seems they want to rewrite stuff or continue what has already been done like with Picard. I rather see new characters going forward instead of going back. I hope anyone who enjoys them don't take this personally. It's not my intent.

No. I can't wake the dead me dreaming.

In early 1970s my parents bought me the Star Trek dolls - Kirk, Spock and the Russian dude. Every time I look at them they remind of being locked in the attic with the dolls and mothballs. I remember specifically having to take the little yellow coat off of Kirk to be careful not to damage the velcro at the neck, and tuck the dolls away in the corner so the moths won't find them.

My father never liked Star Trek. One night I was asleep and he woke me up and then knocked me out. I spent the next ten years living in the attic playing with the dolls at watching a static UHF TV. When Star Trek would air, my father would connect the antenna to the line out the roof so that was my only connection to reality.

After the accident it got worse. The 1980s were spent in the attic, subsisting entirely on pancakes and pizzas as that was all that would fit through the bottom of the attic door. When I was finally exposed to TNG in my 30s I was amazed that people could replicate food so obviously I was attracted to the microwave. After I put my fathers revolver into the microwave it became clear that I need to use a toaster.

You got to live entirely on pizza & pancakes for a decade and have the audacity to complain?

Okay, I have spoken to you already about this, now it’s time for a formal warning for spamming.

In the future please try to be on topic and make at least minimal sense.

I don't understand - I am a victim of domestic abuse and Star Trek OST got me through a decade of torment and you're telling me to be quiet? For shame.

I remember the post-Enterprise dark times, when it seemed like there was no room for Star Trek in the 21st century (in fact, I think it seemed that way even DURING Enterprise). Now I feel like I'm living in a golden age.

Instead I see a lot of people criticizing: "Oh no, they made the wrong period to make the new series", "The choice of the actor who will play the fourth extra on the bridge was a disaster", "Ha ha! But have you seen how they made the new warp nacelles? Do they take us for idiots???"

I, on the other hand, am simply happy to know that every now and then I will see a new episode that will take me to the stars. But am I the only one? Too naive and not savvy enough to "really" understand what is needed in a new Star Trek series?
Way late to the party but as someone who was a bit too young to see Trek's golden age, I too am happy for the new shows, even if not all of them click for me, cuz new fans mean new eyes onto the classics anyway. I dunno how many people who started w Lower Decks because "haha Trek adult cartoon" but then actually got invested in the mythos., nor how many kiddos today will look up VOY in five years bc of Prodigy. All of that is a good thing, IMO.

You're not understanding it because you're overthinking it. Normie Across the Street might've watched TOS or TNG, and they might've seen the movies. But they don't care about Star Trek shows that aren't TOS or TNG. So they're not going to care if CBS aired Discovery. They didn't watch.

I'm sure they're aware of further shows being made, even if not by name. But they don't care about those shows any more than they cared about DS9, VOY, or ENT. They'll go watch a reboot Star Trek movie, but they're not going to get a subscription to watch "all those Star Trek shows!" They ignore them. It doesn't matter if there's one new Star Trek show or 100 new Star Trek shows. They don't care. They're not interested. So it makes no difference to them how many new Star Trek shows there are.

It makes a difference to us if there's one new Star Trek show or 100 because we'll watch or at least we'll weigh if we watch. Normie Across the Street isn't going to do that. It's "out of sight, out of mind" for Normie. As far as Normie is concerned, they think there's probably something out there, but they couldn't tell you what it is for the life of them.
I won't lie, even I was hesitant to get a P+ subscription solely for Trek and if I wasn't already a lifelong Bold and the Beautiful fan, not even PIC would have been enough to get me subbed back in 2020.

No!

I hate the picking and the chosing of Trek. You can handle Greek gods but not Lucifer?

I always found a good mix. Some absurd, some serious.
i have a problem with the awful drawing - does that count?

... lucifer is as real as greek gods, so that it is not
TOS took it fairly seriously - most of the time - and when they didn't you usually knew why. There was inconsistent quality, and internal contradiction but, in the end it was generally meant for adult viewers, not kids.
german tv dubbed it for kids (okay teenagers) so your trek wasn't mine (it now is, though)
I've been a fan for at least 36 of my 40 years on this Earth. Does that qualify me as an old fan?
devoted yes - old nope

Agree with this. I am taking a break from new Trek now. I’m quite content with TOS to DS9 frankly. I just don’t think I particularly like the current style of tv and filmmaking. I don’t much care for the current crop of any of the old franchises I loved growing up, from Trek to Star Wars to Doctor Who, Ghostbusters, and so on.

I’m only 45, but admittedly I feel like I’m in my 80’s. What can you do.

Well, you can buy an old fashioned VHS and a CRT style TV, good luck with that. Component cables are pretty easy to come by however and unless you have a photon torpedo in your head you should be able to figure it all out at your local "Ferengi" market (that's slang for ghetto flea markets filled with undesirables (the Feregni are Star Trek version of Jews, it is a fact and the mods won't let you know the truth)).

I still own one. So what's the issue. It still works, still watching things on VHS. My kids know how to use it, and how to rewind. We also stream.

Why ditch a tech just because something newer came along?
You're living the dream bro! don't stop. Nothing better than a VHS out of an hustler mag, no disagreement here mate.
