Old Star Trek fans: don't you sometimes get happy just because there are new series?

To be fair in this situation they could've likely resolved the threat of the Ceti eel by sticking a jar on top of it, they didn't have to bring out the ray guns.

But Kirk was in a crisis situation, stuck in a cave with a creature possessing unknown capabilities that just led to the deaths of two people right in front of him, so I can forgive him for removing it from the equation permanently.

He was also probably pretty pissed off at the time and vaporizing one of the creatures responsible for their current situation was a relatively harmless way of venting.

Recently read that Roddenberry hated the scene where Kirk shoots the Ceti eel coming out of Chekov's ear, because he thought that was not a thing a Starfleet admiral would do. Even though it was immediately obvious these were nasty creatures.

Guess Kirk shouldn't have flooded that Deneva colony with UV light either, but spend more time at looking into a solution that would save both parasites and colonists ...
Or killing (instead of stunning) the Salt Vampire.

See, when you evolve as a person you don't end up killing things just because they are a threat.

Unless it's a host creature at Starfleet Headquarters then blow that f*****'s head off!
I think possessing Starfleet's leadership and blowing up any crew that finds out about it basically counts as begging to get your head blown off. Starfleet officers are extremely nice people who will bend over backwards to do the benevolent and reasonable thing in almost every situation, but you do not want to test the limits of their evolved morality.

See also the Crystaline Entity.

Shame, shame, shame.

If I were to create a television series and someone else started to tell me how things should be done and almost take over the whole thing I might get pissed too.
That's the life of a television or movie producer. They answer to the studios, who are the ultimate authority and have the right to tell the creators how they want things done or had the reins over to someone else. As a professional working in Hollywood, Roddenberry would have known this. Indeed, no creator of a TV show or movie series has freedom over that which they create, with the possible exception of George Lucas, and he eventually sold that freedom to Disney anyway.

The amount of in-fighting and outright sabotage Gene did to Harold Livingston and by extension Robert Wise during the making of The Motion Picture completely justifies Paramount booting him upstairs. He became a liability to production, and at the end of the day, that's bad for business.

I need to refresh my memory but wasn't Gene also upset cuz he made three different drafts of the story which Paramount ultimately scrapped or am I misremembering it?

There were a bunch of different attempts between 1975-1977, so I doubt it was that. There was one point at the start of writing In Thy Image where Harold Livingston did the first draft, Gene wrote another, thinking it was better. In the subsequent meeting with Michael Eisner, the Paramount studio head, Eisner held up two drafts and said something to the effect of "Harold's is a movie script... Gene's is a TV script... we want the movie script," and proceeded to go with Livingston's version. I'm pretty sure Gene never forgave anyone in that meeting after that.

To answer the OP question…no. I only get excited if I actually like the particular series. I loved all Trek up until Voyager, which I bailed on around season six, and Enterprise, which I ditched after season two. I didn’t hate them or crusade against them online like the more vengeful of we Trek nerds. I just simply didn’t care. They weren’t even on my radar.

I’m kind of 50-50 on NuTrek, although I personally feel Trek needs to be rested for a few years now. I don’t begrudge them continuing to make new shows. I just…as was the case with Voyager and Enterprise, don’t really care. But I’m glad a lot of fans do like shows like SNW and LD.

I've seen this posted a lot.
People say Trek needs a rest.
If it's on and you're not watching or it's off and you're not watching, the result is identical.

And for people that hated Discovery, what did the rest from Enterprise to Discovery succeed in doing?

In other words. Resting Trek doesn't seem to change anything. I think the only big change happens based on who's in charge. Macro and/or micro level of "charge" can be debated.

Yeah, I think creators need a rest a lot more than audiences do. I do believe that people can get tired of watching the same series for years and end up feeling like they've seen it all before, but everything gets cancelled too soon for that to happen these days.

Yup!
And at that point, it's not Trek that needs the rest but simply the individual.

It's also okay to grow out of things and move on.

Can you see a fan of (pick any televised sport) getting tired it and vocally wanting (same sport) to take a break simply because they're done with it?
