NX-02 Columbia's Bridge

Tribble puncher

Captain
Captain
Going through and watching random eps of Enterprise, I finally saw the 2 parter with the Augment Virus. and the only thing I could think of was "why the hell did they put those crappy light poles on the bridge?" did they actually serve a purpose?

Gotta be nothing less than an easy visual clue as to which bridge we're looking at (Columbia or Enterprise).

I wouldn't be surprised if that was pretty much the exact sort of thinking that went into it. Which doesn't make any sense to me. You'd think the different crews would let us know which bridge was which.

Maybe they should have painted it in something more like the TOS bridge color scheme. Because, a nod to continuity?

I can only assume the "light poles" were extra power feeds to the sensor dome above the bridge. Or perhaps a different kind of system's readout - if the pattern and sound falters, the crew immediately know something is wrong.

Of course, the real-life reason is to make the bridges distinguishable at a glance. Those things look like they belong in the engine room.

The bright blue door and railing were supposed to evoke TOS, as was the Columbia's larger bronze deflector dish and brighter silver hull colouring.

Painting takes time and money. Adding a few easily portable prop elements, not so much.

In TOS, we knew the bridge wasn't on the Enterprise because the Captain's chair had a high back.

Remember, these are network TV execs we're talking about here. They prefer to assume viewers are as dumb as possible.

Of course, we're Trek fans, we can pick out which ship is which. But the network suits can't assume that we will. Remember, they did this even in TOS' time: different Constitution-class bridges always had different lighting, or a different chair, or whatever.
