MLB Off Season 24-25

A number of MLB hopefuls are likely to take part in the qualifiers for next year's World Baseball Classic, which are set to start later this week.

Of the two qualifier pools to be held, the one being hosted in Taiwan might be of particular note - not least since the host team is set to play all three of their games in front of sold-out crowds at the 40,000-seater Taipei Dome.

These games are to be live streamed on the WBC YouTube channel.

Dodgers pitcher Bobby Miller sent to the hospital after being hit in the head by a 105mph line drive during spring training game.

In Day 1 of the WBC Qualifiers, South Africa narrowly lost to Nicragaua by 2-1 in extra innings.

Later on, Spain made quite the statement against the host team, defeating Chinese Taipei by 12 runs to 5 - and getting very close to triggering the Mercy Rule in the process.

On a side note: I found out that the Taiwanese Mandarin for "Mercy Rule" is is "慈悲條款" (or "Cíbēi tiáokuǎn")...

Having burned through so many of their bullpen options in the first game, the hosts now have to be watchful of the strict pitch count limits imposed for the WBCQs over the next two (or possibly three) games, if they want to have any serious prospect of turning things around in time to qualify for next year's World Baseball Classic.

in any case, they'll play South Africa on Day 2, a few hours after the game between Spain and Nicaragua.

Day 2 of the WBC Qualifiers is done.

Once again, Nicaragua manged to win by 2 runs to 1 in extra innings, this time against Spain.

Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei managed an inside-the-park home run, in the course of their 9-1 win against South Africa.

Day 3 shall decide which one team gets a direct qualification to the 2026 WBC from this pool, and which two teams have to go to a playoff game on Tuesday.

-----

EDIT: After Day 3, Nicaragua booked their direct ticket to the 2026 WBC, with a 6-0 win over Chinese Taipei.

Earlier, Spain defeated South Africa by 9 runs to 1.

So, Game 7 on Tuesday shall see Spain play as the "home" team against Chinese Taipei, to establish who is to join Nicaragua in qualifying for next year's tournament from Pool A.

ESPN is opting out of broadcasting MLB games after this season, citing fiscal responsibility. Rob Manfred, meanwhile, is upset that ESPN doesn't do much MLB coverage outside of game broadcasts.

Ouch. Money is getting tight in cable land, and MLB probably was the biggest beneficiary of its boom... now comes the bust.

No more P00P games. The Phillies' TV broadcasts introduced a new scorebug during Spring Training that uses abbreviations (PHI, ATL, LAD, etc) rather than logos, so the score at the beginning of Phillies - Pirates matchups will no longer read "P 0 0 P" :(

Blue Jays and Vlad Jr. fail to come to a contract agreement, which means he's hitting free agency after this season. I assume they'll trade him at the deadline if they're out of it.
Fans are ranging from canceling their Sportsnet (channel & team run by the same company) subscriptions, planning different ways to show their support when Vlad comes to bat or where I am, apathetic.

This front office went out of its way to throw money at Ohtani and Soto, but when it comes to their homegrown talent, like Vlad and Bo Bichette, suddenly the purse strings are closed.

I don't know if the direction is coming from the corporate ownership or from Shapiro or if Atkins doesn't believe in their talent. Either way, its a horrible look for a team that is not going to be relevant after this season.

I cannot wait to pay $20 a month to watch Braves games. No more dubious methods or VPNs I have to change every game. With MLB finally dumping ESPN next year, I'll only have to find the occasional FOX or Peacock game.

After a tense Game 7 in front of a packed crowd at the Taipei Dome, Chinese Taipei managed to secure a 6-3 win against Spain, booking a spot for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

With Pool A of the WBCQs now done and dusted, the focus turns to Pool B in Tuscon, Arizona; where Colombia, Brazil, China, and Germany shall vie for the last 2 qualification slots.

I suppose anyone reading this who happens to be within reasonable travel distance from the Kino Sports Complex might still be able to book a ticket or few to one or more of these games...

I subscribe to MLBTV. It's not that expensive when you look at it per game. It's got some good features too.

Not that my team does a lot to cheer for...

:scream:
