Just Started SNW RE: Uhura

Zoe Saldana was fine as Uhura. The problem was the dumb relationship she had with Spock that was completely nonexistent in TOS because of some miniscule scene taken out of context to justify it.
One could say the same WRT Christine and Spock given the basis of that started in a scene from TOS S1 The Naked Now when they were in fact both technically drunk due to the water molecule 'virus.'.

There's nothing 'out of context' in the Spock/Uhura scene fron TOS S1 Charlie X anymore then from The Naked Now.

TOS practically beat the audience over the head with Chapel’s unrequited love for Spock with almost every episode Chapel was in. It isn’t remotely the same thing.

Not for the remainder of TOS S1. They brought it up again in the TOS S2 premiere Amok Time, and again in S2 A Private Little War, but no they didn't reference it every episode she had a scene in.

Semantics. Spock and Uhura’s interactions are not remotely the same as Spock and Chapel’s interactions.

Let’s see…just to pick one example, the only thing Spock does in WMFA is complement Uhura’s communication skills. Hardly the sign of two people interested in each other. And not remotely what I would describe as ‘playful.’

There are definitely differences between TOS and SNW. The major reason is the times. As much as I liked TOS, some of the old attitudes were ca-ca and had to be changed a bit, you know?

I figure, if the show entertains and doesn't go too far out in left field from the original, it's all good. If it fails to entertain, I'll give up on it like I did Disco which got too emo for me.

Yep. Not a fan of misogyny. I mean, c’mon. When Cage Pike doesn’t like women on his bridge, you know Anson Mount’s version is going to be the polar opposite of that. To think that guy was once a sexist pig stretches credibility.

I think SNW is a good reimagining of TOS so far. The only thing I really don’t like is the xenomorph Gorn. I hope they have a lot less of that in the future.

Getting rid of the Gorn would be like getting rid of the albatross on a ship. It can only benefit the show.

I still hold that the parts of The Cage that weren't used in The Menagerie (like the aforementioned line), are the equivalent of deleted scenes and thus didn't happen, just like Picard didn't have a first officer named Madden.

That’s fair. I think a better example of this would be Spock making an offhand rape joke at Rand’s expense after she was attacked by transporter duplicate Kirk. Sure it’s completely out of character (unless they hadn’t fully fleshed Spock out yet), but it was still quite jarring to a contemporary audience. Or how Kirk, McCoy, Spock and Cochrane treat Nancy Hedford as if she's a piece of meat in "Metamorphosis."
