News INTERNATIONAL RIGHTS TO AMAZON!

Why January 22nd? Why not December 22nd? Why the wait? It's not like any merchandising needs be done. Just upload the videos to the requisite sites, which should take place less than a couple days. Would've been a good surprise holiday gift.

Sometimes, I don't get these legal stipulations.

It's a give and take in negotiation.

Because it is..........move along.

*shrugs*

I was just wondering why. The link to StarTrek.com doesn't say, McMahan didn't say on Twitter, the original Hollywood Reporter article doesn't go into details. It's an odd little mystery. Nothing to fret over.

Amazon Prime drops their releases on Fridays, usually once or twice a month within the last two weeks. The last big release was on December 11th, which I assume was a little early because of the holiday season. So, I'm just guessing that the holiday season has pushed their releases into January, and the release schedule only has the one opening (Friday, January 22nd), which is the same date they plan on releasing The Flack and 3 Caminos as well.

But that's all speculation from looking at the release schedule. It doesn't go into understanding the business strategy behind these bunched up releases. fireproof suggests it's probably part of the negotiation (thank you for not mocking me over a simple question, btw), that January 22nd was the earliest release date for the amount of money CBS was able to get.

I hope it's a smashing success, though, and further Star Trek series open with a Netflix/Prime-style episode drop.

Here's my outsider's viewpoint based upon prior business experience. First of all, I have no doubt it was part of negotiations. Sooner dates sound good but the distributor is going to want time to format the content, to test it's functionality, and to caption what they need to caption. I have a feeling those tech issues made getting it on earlier more expensive than CBS was willing to spend.

Also, as much as I'm sure there was a holiday push, that emphasis is not the same this year. People have been streaming a lot more content with the pandemic which means that Amazon may have wanted it in January to build up 2021's numbers.

It's all speculation, and ultimately we won't know because trade negotiations like this are not going to be revealed for the sake of business practices. Negotiations being confidential is usually a stipulation of the process.

Discovery's still gonna run until January 8, so maybe they didn't want to creative overlap. Assuming Amazon drops new shows on Fridays on the last two weeks (which someone say upthread) January 22 is actually the next available date.
