Hemmer Character Teaser

I’m excited about his being an Aenar. It’s be cool if we get more info about his homeworld (if he was born there) and maybe see some new Andorians too.

I wonder what the Tellarites will look like on SNW. They and the Andorians are different every time we see them.

According to Wikipedia, Hemmer is just a recurring character. I am not sure if that is a mistake though as he has been marketed the same as every other character.

Yeah, he’s a recurring.

This is from today’s press release (emphasis mine):
Paramount Press Release said:
STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS also stars Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La’an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Lt. Erica Ortegas and Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga, and features recurring guest star Bruce Horak as Hemmer.

I wonder why?

‪‪I would guess an issue of cost primarily.

Full fledged cast members cost more money, and his character has to have an increased makeup and effects budget compared to the others.

There are 8 series cast members, which is a fair amount on its own. Hopefully he has a meaty role, and like Wilson Cruz’s Hugh Culber on Discovery, maybe he’ll be upped from recurring to main cast member over time.

I wonder why?

He's the only cast member who has to wear full mask makeup. Could you blame him if he didn't want to be in the makeup chair for 8 hours for a 2-minute non-critical role one week?

I think part of the reason DS9 characters like Nog, Garak, and Martok are remembered so well is because they were recurring - they didn't have to include them in episodes they didn't have a role. Hell, they offered Andy Robinson at one point the ability to become part of the main cast, and he turned it down for just this reason - he didn't want to have to show up every week if most of it was going to be flavor scenes hanging out on the promenade.

I bet he gets bumped to regular status in season 2 if he becomes as popular as I predict. If the show has any flaw this upcoming season I think it might be that he is underused and people will be clamoring for more Hemmer.
