Game Thread Discussion

I don't want to drag the 5 Word thread off topic but do want to have a discussion with the VOY forum members about two things. I was under the impression the posting limit of 5 per day in game threads was perhaps more well known. It was not my intention to throw that at folks out of the blue. The rules about game threads were discussed many years ago amongst staff and created primarily for the Lounges, where most of the game threads resided, They were created to prevent a lot of short spammy posts and to prevent members, especially new ones, from artificially inflating post count to achieve rank or board accolades such as they are. Quality over quantity so to speak. These are the rules I speak of which are posted in every lounge.
Lounge Game Thread Rules

No more than five game threads per lounge. If a lounge already has more than five game threads, they will be allowed until they post out at 1000 posts and are closed. Any games threads started from here on out that break the “five” rule limit will be closed.

No posting more than five times a day in a game thread.

All game threads will have the word “Game” as the first word in the title. If someone accidentally starts a game thread without it, the moderator will add it in.
As more game threads moved into the upper forums these same rules, in my mind, applied. I've discussed this with admin, they do apply, but they perhaps weren't clarified. So here they are if you don't go into the lounges. If you don't go into the lounges I highly recommend them. I had fun with folks my own rank back in the day in them. :)

Issue number two: what do we want to do with the 5 Word Thread? It was created in 2009 and is pushing 35 thousand posts long. Seems a bit long in the tooth. I was thinking we could shut it down and create something new. I kind of like the 7 Word Threads. Maybe with a loose narrative arc and a set post limit so the tale made some kind of sense at the end? It would be a bit more effort. Open to suggestions!

Since you're open to suggestions, how about something like this..

The Amazing Star Trek Voyager 7 Word Story Thread #1:
Harry Kim and the Chamber of Secrets
Chapter One: In which Harry is passed Over for Promotion

Rules:
  • 7 words allowed a post.
  • No more than 5 posts in the thread a day.
  • A chapter thread should be no shorter than 1000 words and no longer than 2000 words.
  • If a poster completes a chapter they must post a new thread for the following chapter.
  • Story ends after 12 chapters.
  • Harry must have a character arc across the 12 chapters.

1. Keeping topics on-topic is hard enough when they don't switch authors every few words.

2. The existing topic is/was obviously popular and thriving. Why end something that people are enjoying?

3. And also, why limit it? Games are supposed to be fun.

1. True

2. Monotony. Mix things up a bit? Every beginning story has an end? Along those lines.

3. Spam. The game rules were created years ago because there's really no substance to the posts and games were used to only increase post count to achieve certain board milestones. By some. The old board software struggled with super long threads which was another reason although I'm not sure if that is as much of an issue now.

That said there doesn't appear to be much interest in changing the format...
