Beginning with the end, I saw it coming that an Astronaut and a Cosmonaut would both take the first step together, but I didn't expect it to be unplanned or hilarious. Still, Ed (or was it Gordo?) would be proud from way back when, "If you don't step your Commie ass back in that hatch, I'm gonna come over there and smack you down" are much better first words than the party-approved claptrap about the Marxist-Leninist way of life.
Good on Ed for being prudent and hitting the abort rockets after nearly smashing into the side of a mountain. Also very stylish storytelling to demonstrate character growth by having a character do the exact same thing at the end(?) of his story he did at the beginning, but have it mean something totally different.
Wayne's back! Sadly, we only hear about Molly, but it's always a special treat to check back in with the best buddies on the show. I kept wanting him to call the Goo Balls "Goof Balls" for Simpsons reasons.
I laughed at Karen's stoned message to Ed being five times longer than her call about quitting her job, though I was momentarily concerned we'd see the whole thing.
It was cute that Russian Matt Smith had a (reciprocated!) crush on Kelly, and I also like that they sped through it in one episode.
Ed and Danny's card game was one of the tensest scenes I've seen on TV for a long time. Even more than the landings. I don't viscerally hate the extreme awkwardness and cringe intrinsic to this plotline the way most people do, and I've got a lot of enthusiasm for its current form from the show's lineage and knowing it comes from a long line of shows that knew how to do amazing pay-offs to these sorts of slow-burn bomb-under-the-table stories. However, I think Nick is kind of a dipshit for not mentioning it to the skipper that Danny very unsubtly pumped him for information and immediately left as soon as he got a piece of information that would let him take over the ship. Unless he did off-screen and Ed is also playing mind-games with Danny, Nick did look like he noticed that exchange was odd, and slipping groundwork for a critical future development into an off-hand background moment is also something that this show and its ancestors have done.
I'm starting to think Margo might actually pull off some political jiu-jitsu maneuver to turn the KGB's machinations back on itself. She does seem well-motivated, but the question is, how will this dovetail with Aleida's need to find NASA's leak?
