Cyberpunk 2077

Playing on PC and loving it. 12-ish hours in.

I have encountered only one bug so far and that one is inconsequential gameplay wise (enemies going down/dying and still triggering "we gotta get 'em" yells).

Running it on 1080p/Ultra and it looks gorgeous.

Switching to a completely new engine and getting familiar with it takes time, if that were the case the game might not be out Christmas 2021.

It took eight years already. Switching to another engine would’ve put its release around Christmas 2030.

Sony just pulled Cyberpunk from the PlayStation Store and will offer refunds to all PS4 players.

That is massive, I’m not sure they’ve ever done this before.

I do feel horrible for the programmers though - by all accounts CD really pushed them extremely hard the last few months to get this game out, i would guess so hard that it could have been a case for worker protection and a union but this is unfortunately common practice in this business close to major release dates.

With a game this complex bugs are inevitable but apparently CD didn't want to delay again so close to Christmas so they released it, crossed their fingers and hoped for the best but i can't imagine they didn't know about the problems in advance. They probably only hoped it wouldn't be so severe and they could get by with a steady stream of patches until the worst had been fixed.

Thing is, they had to certify it in order for it to be released in the first place. They're just covering their asses now.

Well, certification apparently isn’t really a quality control test, more that it doesn’t brick consoles.

Not like they ever pulled Fallout 76 or anything and I think they thought CDPR would patch it.

I think it’s the sheer amount of requests vs. How long it may take to fix, CDPR said they would do two major patches to fix in January and February which, if you’ve paid full price now and want to play it now is problematic and I also feel for the actual Devs who, it’s the holidays right and they need to have a break so, it’s quite a mess.

Looks like maybe CDPR had a hand in this perhaps we’ll see, be interesting to see if Microsoft follows suit.

I hope not. It’s been working pretty well for me, even on my older X1 console. It would be bad business to punish a whole market share unnecessarily just because it doesn’t work on another. Apples and hand grenades.

As mentioned above, console manufacturer cert isn't in any way related to quality control of the product. Basically, Sony and Microsoft (and Nintendo) make sure that the game as normally played won't brick systems, doesn't sideload any malware onto the console and doesn't have any other glaring security holes. The lack of testing and optimization is entirely upon CD Projekt Red.

They got caught between a rock and a hard place. What they wanted to make was certainly ambitious, but they set their sights too high and ended up making a 'next-gen' game when most of their playerbase was still on last-gen hardware. With covid slowing things down, combined with hardware shortages, they probably started to panic. What should have happened was waiting at least another year and release it as an exclusive for the new generation when the situation with the hardware would have stabilized.

I do wonder if they could have absorbed another year of funding development of the game?

Probably, with all the pre-orders front-loading their revenue stream. This isn’t Star Citizen.

And people still would have bought it later on, despite the usual complaining that would ensue. I’m still waiting for Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI.

^Yeah, pre-orders, plus all the revenue from The Witcher 3. Not to mention, they also have their side-business, GOG, so I think they would have been fine a year out, plus that would have eliminated many of the complaints and promises they couldn't keep.

I'm guessing only temporarily to satisfy investors until the game is patched to a playable state, at which point it would be put back on sale.
