Emulation is better than modern gaming

Someone actually made a homebrew port of Pac-Man for the original Atari VCS (aka 2600) that is much, much more faithful to the arcade version. It even includes (at least some) of the between level intermission cutscenes.

That is quite fantastic

Ordered the Atari 7800+ from Amazon. Should be here Friday.

To be fair to the original programmer, a lot more tools and less silly restrictions were in play when this version was developed.

I wonder if anyone has ever opened up the rom on the original 2600 Pac-Man and changed the color scheme? The lack of a black background really throws off the look of the game. I wonder WTF? Atari was thinking with that one.

IIRC, Pac Man was being used under license from Midway by Atari. What further muddied the waters was a bunch of 20-something’s who took a bunch of Atari games and built mod kits for them, essentially making them better. That’s where Ms. Pac Man came from. Lawsuits popped up everywhere and it got kind of complicated. Atari started going for quantity, as opposed to quality (the exclusive Atari game based on E.T. is credited by some with single-handedly destroying the home gaming industry back in the 80’s, along with the 2600 platform). I also remember hearing that Midway preferred other up-and-coming platforms like ColecoVision (which had a lot of games that most closely resembled their coin-op originals) and demanded that the Atari version be sub-standard. It’s been a long time since I read about this - I’m sure I’m missing a lot of details, but I remember the stunning lack of quality for the 2600 was more than just a simple rush job.

You’re thinking of Atari ports of Coleco properties, like Donkey Kong.

they only allowed black backgrounds for outer space games.

The 7800 plus is okay, but its still basically running emulators, and is dumping the cartridge each time. It has problems with some games, and some modern homebrews; the best results are still getting an original console modded. I have a CRT for old school gaming, but I still modded a colecovision and a 7800 for RCA outputs, and i have a GameDrive to load with ROMs. NES style aftermarket controllers for both. Some homebrew physical games from Opcode. (brand new colecovision and 7800 cartridges complete in box with manuals.)

There was an urban legend that Coleco made their ports published for the 2600 inferior on purpose, but the original programmers have since debunked that; they just had limited time and a very limited console, so the ports were always going to be inferior. Coleco was still selling the Gemini, their version of the 2600, so there was no reason to make the games worse on purpose. They wanted to move those cartridges.

Premiere 2600 games. Top of the line. Champ Games has been around forever, they used to do ports and clones of arcade games for DOS way back in the day.

And this is the fix for Donkey Kong

This is the old programmers from Activision, forming their own company and releasing games.

This is probably my favorite of the modern 2600 games. Its basically a metroidvania style adventure with items and powerups..... insane.

I haven’t had a chance to play it, but Turbo Arcade for the 2600 looks amazing.

I've played some of the demos, but i haven't bought any of the champ games stuff yet. That one wasn't out when i tried the demos so I haven't either. Zookeeper and Galagon were both really good. 2600 port of Bosconian is phenomenal. I think it has an extra chip in it, no way the 2600 is handling that amount of sprites on its own.

I've been waiting a year and a half for the games i ordered from the atariage Last Chance sale, right before New Atari bought them.
