Generally speaking I'm highly skeptical of popular things because I think most often a lot of people flock to something because a lot of other people seem to. It isn't always true, but I find it often true. Individuals can be smart but collectively speaking people can tend to be like lemmings and can be inclined to follow what everyone else seems to be doing.
As a fan of numerous Very Popular Things, i really resent that attitude. If anything, I tend to
avoid overly-hyped media products. I actually avoided "Star Wars" until "The Empire Strikes Back" premiered (endless articles in "Starlog" wore me down, and I was mainly buying "Starlog" for ST: TMP and ST II news). I avoided seeing "Jaws" (too scary), "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (until a rerelease), "E.T.: The Extraterrestrial" (until TV) and "Alien" (too scary) on the big screen, and had to revisit them on VHS to "catch up".
I'm certainly not a lemming, and had plenty of concerns and disappoints re ST V, "Generations", DS9, VOY and ENT. But I had faith in JJ and Bad Robot, based on their other successes, and they did
exactly what they promised to do. No surprises.
Oh, and...
- I never listen to (c)rap music.
- I've liked some heavy metal, but don't seek it out.
- I like many sitcoms, but gave
Friends a wide birth until about Season Three, and liked it enough to catch re-runs.
- I enjoy ENT and was often disappointed with early VOY.
- NuBSG did nothing for me. Neither did BSG.
