College Football 2023 - RIP Pac-12

Coach Heupel was never going to force Joe out but the best outcome for us was to start next season in the bowl game.

I think that will likely be the model going forward for teams that make minor bowls. More akin to a preseason game for the next season.

Besides, Michigan would have to vacate in a few years, anyway.

I wonder if the NCAA will yield that type of power going forward over Big 10/SEC football/basketball.

Interesting take on the possible future of college football…

whelp... I am not liking how this game appears to be going. I missed the first bit but it looks like Penix's WRs stopped catching things. Wow.

Damn Penix is hearing footsteps everywhere. He's rattled as hell. Playing like he's been sacked 200 times which given how fast Mich is getting past UW's line, he probably has been.

They are letting Michigan's DBs get away with a lot. Even so, Washington'ss WRs have been disappointing this game after being so damn good.

Man, this was so close after one half, but after Penix's INT to open the 3rd Quarter it seemed like they just couldn't get anything going. I missed a lot of the game, did Penix get a particularly vicious hit with how he was constantly holding his side like his ribs were hurt, or just too many of them? His receivers couldn't catch and his throws seemed to be constantly off, and the Michigan line was blowing past the Washington OL constantly. They did seem to be letting the DBs get away with a lot, and with how run-heavy Michigan was it didn't affect them as much. Rough to see the Huskies go down like that in the 4th Quarter after they'd been so resilient all season.

In the end, I think the lights were too bright for Washington. They made mistakes they hadn't made all year long and hadn't made in the semis. Penix was rattled and their WRs went from amazing to not being able to catch perfectly placed balls. It's a shame because I still believe Washington could've beaten Michigan head on -- the moment was just too big for them.

Washington seemed to slow down the Michigan running game for a while after 1Q, but MI ended up with 303 yards and all 4 TD's on the ground.

I wonder if it ends up affecting Penix's draft stock?

People will likely say that it will but I think what will really wind up hurting Penix is his injury history. I think the NFL could/would overlook one game even though it did seem like a melt under pressure because teams feel like they can fix an issue like that, especially since he seemed fine in the semis.

He's also a super senior like Hendon Hooker was (remember Penix was a Butch Jones recruit) so I expect some will knock him for his age as well (though I don't think that matters too much at QB when you have guys like Brady playing at 45).

NICK SABAN RETIRING!

I am so damn glad that we got a chance to beat him before he did. One thing that Bear Bryant never got to do was beat Gen. Bob Neyland. He was even quoted as saying "thank god the old bastard finally retired." But it wasn't all salt as Bear also said, "People think I'm the greatest damn coach in the world but Neyland taught me everything I know."

Of course, Knute Rockne thought Neyland was the best as well and said similar things back in his hey day about how Neyland was the best coach. I suppose just as there are musicians' musicians there are coach's coaches.

Saban doesn't have to worry about that though. His shadow will loom large for a very long time. What a damn legacy.

Unless Washington strikes gold with the replacements, it could be a rough year next season in a tougher conference with a new QB1, WR1, WR2 and WR3.

Damn. That sucks.
Edit to add.
Having had a minute to think about it - do you really want to be the guy that follows Nick Saban?
The pressure is going to be on you to perform, and Alabama fans might not have the patience for a rebuilding season or two.

It makes no sense to me. As for BAMA fans, I don't expect you or DeBoer to have any idea if you've never been around SEC football and BAMA fans. It IS different here, especially for Bammers. These folks murder one another for not being upset enough when the Tide loses. (That's not a made up example but taken straight from a real event - one woman killed another because she wasn't upset enough about BAMA losing a few years ago and it's not the first time it's happened in recent years.). And when/if their in-state rival Auburn beats them the entire state of Alabama wars with itself. It's not healthy. (In fact, Tennessee has played Auburn as much as Alabama despite Auburn not being in our division for the past 25+ years because the BAMA-AU rivalry got so hot many years ago that it had to be paused by Alabama's state lawmakers for several years and during that time Tennessee played Auburn while BAMA didn't.

DeBoer has no idea what he's getting himself and his family into. I don't think Alabama fans will be patient at all. Even the ones that intend to be patient can't set aside expectations that easily. They've had an unprecedented level of being spoiled over the past 17 years and DeBoer is bringing in a style of football foreign to Alabama football. I can't hope for DeBoer's success because he's going to be coaching for my rival but I hope I'm wrong about the culture shock he's about to experience because Gump Life ain't normal life.

BTW, Washington: You need to hire Alex Golesh. He was Heupel's OC in 22. Just coached South Florida to a 7-6 season in year 1 as a HC. South Florida was coming off 1-11 the year prior and was the 2nd biggest turnaround in all of FBS this season. https://sports.yahoo.com/usf-bulls-mostly-snubbed-aac-173400289.html

Golesh uses Heupel's offense which is a good fit for Washington with its current players. The main differences would be we space players out and run the ball a lot but you still get explosive passing plays.

The rest of you remember the name because Alex Golesh is gonna be a star one day. I knew last year he was ready to be a HC and now that he is he's not going to stay hidden long. He will get his shot soon and he will be one of the best if he goes to the right place.
