College Football 2023 - RIP Pac-12

I'm so damned glad The Devil Saban is gone. I'm sad I have to root against Kalen DeBoer now though, he seems like a really good egg.

I'm afraid it's going to be like Bryan Harsin at Auburn. Auburn is the more enlightened of the two by far but the culture problems and a general lack of SEC ties for recruiting doomed him. Auburn boosters openly warred with him and pushed him out the door almost as soon as he got there -- even when he was doing relatively well. IDK if those in TTown learned from that example or not.

It's said that DeBoer is bringing his entire staff and is very loyal to them and that may well turn out to be something that hurts him a great deal because they're just as inexperienced when it comes to SEC recruiting as he is. It's going to be an uphill climb and they're going to have to learn fast. It's not going to be an easy job at all.

And yeah, it does suck that we now have root against him because he does seem like a good one.

BTW, Washington: You need to hire Alex Golesh. He was Heupel's OC in 22. Just coached South Florida to a 7-6 season in year 1 as a HC. South Florida was coming off 1-11 the year prior and was the 2nd biggest turnaround in all of FBS this season.

I struggle with the idea of a major program hiring guys that had one great season, or just one season as a head coach. South Florida to a Washington team moving to the Big 10 is a heck of a leap. Not saying he can't do it, but I don't think the odds are in his favor.

He replicated Heupel's offense at USF and it only took him an offseason to do it. That's honestly good enough for me given how bad USF has been. I don't think anyone will hire him right now but taking a team with 1 win and a long history of sucking to 7 wins is incredible. Meanwhile Jeff Lebby jumped from Heupel OC to another OC job at OM to HC at Miss State.

Hell, we hired a DC with no experience - it failed miserably (of course a lot of our hires starting with Kiffin failed miserably). UGA hired a DC with no experience and he's currently the best coach in college ball. So actually, while it may be weird Golesh already having a HC job is more experience than Kirby Smart brought and a ton of other HC hires brought to the table. Oklahoma's HC was another coordinator with no HC experience at all to HC (happens all the time).

And I'll tell you why I'm so adamant about getting Golesh a job. I don't want him in the SEC as a HC. He's going to be a problem.

Hell BAMA's current HC hire brings a painfully thin resume to the table for a program like BAMA.

NICK SABAN RETIRING!

I am so damn glad that we got a chance to beat him before he did.

Well, he was just a temp until Shula got back from the sniffles [SLAP!] OW!

So it’s DuBose…I mean DeBoer…let’s see if his refit is half as good…

What’s Coach Fran doing these days? (cough)

Oh that's music. Sweet, sweet, music. The funny thing is BAMA made all those hires, cheated their balls off, got sanctioned because the entire SEC thought what they were doing was too much, then when you ask them why they sucked during that time frame they'll say, "That no good lying pos Phillip Fulmer iz why" and proceed to go on 30 min rant about how they hate Tennessee and it's our fault they cheated. :guffaw:

Maybe Washington should’ve waited to hire a head coach. Mike McCarthy might be available here in a couple hours.

I'm not sure they had the luxury. The portal opens when a coach leaves or is fired now but tbh, I think that needs to be tweaked so that schools have time to do a search. I think that's why BAMA moved as fast as they did and likewise why Washington wanted to move fast. If you wait too long you'll get burned. You might nail the hire but lose the roster and it could be a lot and not just a few because the NCAA opened up transfers beyond 1 free transfer (we set a record when Pruitt was fired). With all the changes and unintended effects, CFB is an absolute lawless mess right now

Interesting little tidbit on Sports Radio this morning with the UW Athletic Director.
He went to DeBoer with a contract extension just before Thanksgiving and DeBoer refused to sign.
He asked DeBoer if he had been approached by another college about a coaching position and DeBoer refused to confirm or deny.
So, Alabama may have been sounding out DeBoer as early as November in case Saban retired.

This may sound like a strange question but was DeBoer rep'd by Jimmy Sexton? Sexton, who is a UT grad who basically invented agents for coaches, came up with a little known player by the name of Reggie White. Seriously, when Reggie was a player people wanted to influence him, especially the closer it got to him turning pro and they saw Jimmy and he were buddies and started going through Jimmy (I think that's how Reggie signed with the USFL out of college - they were pitching Sexton at Tennessee's bowl game and Sexton would take those pitches to Reggie).

That got parlayed into coaches because at some point an NFL coach one told Jimmy that players have all these agents representing them but "no one represents us" (the coaches).

Sexton parlayed that bit of advice into building up and controlling about 90 percent of the coaching market. He rep'd Saban and if he also rep'd DeBoer you can see how that works. He's done deals like this before in the SEC where he's repping both the guy out and the guy in. That said, it's also likely DeBoer knew his stock would rise after this season and didn't sign because he wanted to squeeze Washington for every nickel.

Miami tight end Cam McCormick has set a new NCAA record.... he's getting a ninth year of eligibility. Hope he has a triple major or a couple masters degrees by now.

So the NCAA came for us and our Chancellor's response made her an overnight folk hero. Tennessee and Virginia AGs joined up to file suit today. There's no fanbase on this planet more uniquely suited to taking down the NCAA than Tennessee fans. You think Schiano was a mess? Oooh just wait. You're welcome in advance. :D

Chip Kelly steps down as head coach at UCLA to become... offensive coordinator at Ohio State.

Tennessee and Virginia have won the injunction against the NCAA being able to enforce NIL. I expected us to lose the injunction but win the overall case. This is big.

The NCAA effectively doesn't exist in Tennessee and Virginia right now (actually, re-reading that I think it means the NCAA can't do anything on NIL until the case is resolved - I didn't think it would apply nationwide but the ruling is broad):

Oregon State and Washington State's slice of the pie used to be $6-7 million annually. However, without the Pac-12, they're looking at getting $360,000. Meanwhile, the other 10 schools that found homes in big time conferences look to be multiplying their pie from two to four times more, with UCLA, USC, Washington and Oregon being those schools getting four times more.

UW Athletic Director Troy Dannon leaving after only five months to take a job at Nebraska.
It's interesting that the night before, he was in California speaking at a donors meeting laying out his plans for the athletic department as it moved to the Big Ten; then flew to Seattle with the rest of the athletic department before catching a plane to Nebraska this morning.
The search is on for the third UW athletic director in less than a year.
