Coda - Both the CO and XO away from ship?

Crewman47

Commodore
Newbie
In the episode Coda why was it necessary for both Janeway AND Chakotay to be out in the Shuttle as we know from past episodes, and this one, that routine excursions almost always lead to some sort of incident?

I would imagine that as 3rd officer, Tuvok would've or should've protested under some Starfleet rule and insisted that someone else should go in place of either one of the two of them?

So we could see Chakotay utterly flip out over the dying Kathryn and give her mouth-to-mouth.

Do we really need a bigger reason?

Maybe it was because Chakotay was the only one who didn't look weird giving mouth-to-mouth to the Captain. I can't imagine Harry or Tom doing that....*shudders*

But I always thought the same thing. It seemed illogical for the Captain and 1st Officer to go on an away mission together because if something really happened, what wasn't too far fetched considering all the shuttle crashes we witnessed, what would happen to the command structure? Of course, there's always Tuvok, but losing both the CO and XO makes a heavy impact.

TheGodBen, it was sarcasm. A joke. I, too, have wondered what could possibly require the two of them to go off like that. But really, the honest truth is this is just a TV show and I'm pretty sure that the real-life reason for that scene is exactly what I stated above. In-universe ... who knows? I'm sure someone will come up with something.

And for the record, Tuvok was second officer. Chakotay=first, Tuvok=second.

/nitpick

maybe they were best suited for the away mission. but it doesnt make much sense the captain and commanding officer on the same away mission in the 1st place. mind u it did show just how much chakotay loved kathryn janeway. it was a very touching episode

They were always doing this on Voyager. Both the CO and XO would be in the same away team, and it always bothered me. I finally reconciled it by thinking of it in terms of two captains leaving together. This way both Chakotay's people and Janeway's people felt represented.

Least we got to see chuckles crying over Kathryn and trying to bring her back to life. That was the highlight of the episode for me :)

I think she was hallucinating that.

You'Ve actually got me thinking there. So she was actually hallucinating her self die and chuckles been gutted, her funeral, the crew speaking highly of her and trying to get her back. i wondered if she hoped that he would bring her back to life. :wtf:

I think parts were him, but the crying and rocking... she was hallucinating that part. I'm not just saying that because I'm J/7er. I'm saying that because of how the episode ends. I think the reception of her actually making it out alive would have been much bigger if Chuckles had really been reacting in that way.

I think she assumed that he'd be that torn up because of the sexual tension between them and the strong friendship they had at the time. What captain doesn't think their crew will have fond memories of them?

...why was it necessary for both ...

If you were the CO & XO on that ship, wouldn't you want to get away sometimes? ;-)

I think we've always wondered about the wisdom of both senior officers being away from the ship at the same time ever since TOS. Heck, it was even worse when Scotty was included on the away teams. TNG tried to address the issue in its first year when Riker made himself such an ass by telling the CO he couldn't go down to the planet on dangerous missions. (Kirk would have phasered him immediately!)

I don't look at it so much as a plot hole, I look at it as a plot device. For some reason it was best to have them both off the ship together... and J/C aside, it was great to see them relaxing over their memories of talent night like two old buddies, rather than Captain and subordinate.

Kirk and Spock were on the same away missions all the time. I know they got away from the in TNG but perhaps Starfleet policy swung back the other way by the time of Voyager?

It's probably up to the captain. If the CO wants it, he/she can take along any crewmember. Just so happens that most captains want to take their XO's.
