Chapel Character Teaser

She wasn't "awful", she was just there.

I think "awful" is, sadly, pretty accurate. She may have been a wonderful person, or she may not, but she wasn't much of an actress. Admittedly this is amplified by the fact that most of the scripts gave her nothing to do, but from watching her in non-Trek roles, I think she would be an obscure actress were it not for Trek.

Both M‘Benga and Chapel have Commander stripes. Very sloppy. With Memory Alpha around it really shouldn‘t be that difficult to get these things right.

Not sloppy at all. TOS itself was also not consistent with rank stripes, so it's consistent inconsistancy.

Chapel herself never had any visible rank in TOS, I don't think she was ever called anything but nurse in TOS. She didn't get a rank until the movies.

She's a lieutenant in TAS, even see it written out on her ID card.

What's M'Benga's rank according to Memory Alpha when he appeared in TOS? I did not see one at all.

In TOS he's just "Doctor" no rank attached and as he's only ever in the short-sleeve clinical smock uniform we never get to see any rank stripes -- so he can be whatever they want him to be. Lt Cdr would

That said, the first impression is that there are some odd choices for the ranks and insignia for several of the main characters.

What is the rank system in strange new worlds?

It' s implied to be the same as TOS, Pike has two thick and one thin, Equivalent to Kirk's two thick and one broken.

That said I wonder if they are doing some kind of spin on the odd rank stripes in The Cage, where the only options are none, one, and two.
Edit:
But if you go to Memory Alpha to find out Chapels rank, it says Commander, (because that's what she ended at). So perhaps it's a case of shoddy research, but it's clear in the article itself.

That was my impression as well. Especially with new uniforms.

Nothing says she wasn't.

She joined the crew of the Enterprise in 2266. She was engaged to Korby when he disappeared 5 years prior, at that time she still had a career in bio-research and was not in Starfleet. She joined Starfleet after Korby disappeared in 2261.

Pike's command of the Enterprise ended in 2262. Based on dates already established in other shows, Chapel wasn't on the Enterprise under Pike.

Pike is still wearing the same thick-thin-thick pattern of cuff stripes that he was wearing in Disco, so definitely not the same as either The Cage or WNMHGB. The Disco pattern was basically a re-use of the JJ-Trek stripes that simplified the original TOS pattern of solid and broken stripes to thick and thin stripes, respectively. Number One wore one thick + one thin in Disco S2, which would be Lieutenant Commander to Pike's Captain.

They had originally missed off the rank stripes completely from the Enterprise uniforms at the start of Disco S2, to the extent that they actually added them in post-production CGI for those scenes already shot before the mistake was pointed out and physical insignia were added to the costumes.

So far, the only other cuff stripes we have seen in the trailers are either two thick stripes (Hemmer, M'Benga, Chapel) and one thick + one thin (Spock, Singh, Ortegas). Uhura is wearing the same cadet badge that Tilly first wore in Disco.

Yes, of course it's perfectly possible that they could have decided to change the pattern of cuff stripes but, based on the known precedent (and the lack of change to Pike's stripes), that would imply Commander and Lieutenant Commander, even if that is not what they actually meant them to be.

Given the previous failure to include ranks at all on the original version of the current Enterprise uniforms, who knows what they're intending but I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of these turn out to be incorrect.

I would email the production team immediately.
