Chapel Character Teaser

Agreed. They just seem very self assured and confident in their abilities, not arrogant.

Even Hemmer feels like he toes the line between arrogance and an alien culture clash that comes from how a combined self confidence and self awareness might be be perceived when delivered bluntly.
Cause nobody remembers how much of a pompous ass Shran the Andorian was. :techman:

If this series is picking up in 2259, then it should be about three years before Roger Korby disappears.

Kirk and Spock seem pretty confident.(Once Jim got over his brooding phase) As does Scotty. The rest were rarely given a chance to shine as characters. Mitchell might be the poster child for confident with a touch of arrogance.

There’s no shortage of confident characters in Trek. That’s my point — confidence doesn’t require you to explicitly state how great you are. This is a very specific characterization that has crept into multiple characters.

I don’t want to read too much into a few minutes of marketing material, but Kurtzman Trek has a history of trouble with show, don’t tell.

I dunno, this teaser comes off a little too cutesy for me. The first one to be like that.

Granted it’s only 30 seconds or so but that’s one of my main concerns with using legacy characters. That they would get a little too cute with hints and references to where they will end up.

and genetically engineering the descendent of Kahn…it’s almost like they are trolling.

So are they going to write out Kirby or whatever his name was? As her fiancée

I dunno. Scotty deliberately promoted himself as a "miracle worker". Spock wasn't shy about mentioning his superior abilities.

I’d argue Scotty deliberately downplayed his abilities in order to be seen as a miracle worker. And that’s a later characterization — TOS Scotty I’d describe as long-suffering. More often than not, he had no more to give.

Also, there’s a difference in a few examples over 25 or 50 years and three 30-second promos in a few days emphasizing the same trait in multiple characters.

The difference is they're 30 second promo designed to sell a product.

Yes, but multiple promos are promoing the same thing, and in multiple characters. It’s a thing.

I’ve thought a little more about this. In the Uhura promo, she corrects Pike that she doesn’t just speak a dozen languages but three times that. That’s not arrogance but suggests that the writers are very fixated on establishing, explicitly, that these characters are the very best. They’ll even have the characters tell you that to your face. Personally, I don’t find that necessary, and don’t really see how that’s a selling point. If anything, I tend to think the franchise has suffered when it falls into the trap of venerating its characters too highly — they should be relatable people who sometimes do superhuman things with great difficulty, not superhumans in general. The latter is boring, and especially dangerous for a prequel series populated by Trek legends.
