Best Star Trek Movies that aren't actually Star Trek Movies

Saul

Vice Admiral
Admiral
For example...

Galaxy Quest
Master and Commander
Crimson Tide

People often compare the above to Star Trek Movies like ST:TWOK etc

What non-Star Trek movie reminds you of Star Trek?

The Hunt for Red October - make it a Klingon or Romulan who's defecting with some sort of new type of starship and it'd be a good Trek story.

Shogun - Arrogant ship's pilot and explorer washes up in an alien land and starts interfering in local politics while having an affair with a court lady. Sounds like Kirk to me.

I always thought The Final Countdown was a great non-Trek Trek movie. I get a very Yesterday's Enterprise vibe from it. Or I should say Yesterday's Enterprise gives me a very The Final Countdown vibe, since it was made first.

2010 is a better non-Trek Trek movie than it is a sequel to 2001. Contact also fits.

Also, while it's not a movie, The West Wing strikes me as very Trekkian.

A lot of apropos choices so far. I think of Alien as somewhat Trek-like, albeit a more cynical vision of the future, in many ways reminiscent of the ep The Man Trap. -- RR

My choices would be:

-Galaxy Quest (obviously):)
-Master and Commander
-Crimson Tide
-The Hunt for Red October
-Run Silent, Run Deep (definitely reminded me of the battle in the Mutara Nebula)
-elements of Alien and Aliens
-the Horatio Hornblower TV movies
-if Galaxy Quest counts, what about Three Amigos? (substitute the townspeople for pacifist aliens, the three amigos for our heroes, and El Guapo's gang for the bad guy aliens) :)

I recommend tracking down an old '60s Cold War movie called "The Bedford Incident". Richard Widmark stars as a Captain driven to breaking point while dodging a Russian submarine. Sidney Poitier is along for the ride as a journalist, causing much of the friction. (Although Widmark is a hard taskmaster, especially in a memorable scene with the ship's underappreciated Doctor). It has one of the best shock endings ever seen on film.

Since Forbidden Planet & Galaxy Quest have already been mentioned:

300.

Best. Klingon. Movie. EVER.

I am surprised that court lady wasn't portrayed by Lucy Liu.

I don't recall Lucy Liu doing any period pieces about obscure Japanese historical characters. Or banging William Shatner.

And since no one's done it, I'm throwing in Planet of the Apes. It fits very well considering some of TOS alternate Earth stories. And several episodes of the Twilight Zone have a rather Trekish feel as well.

The Chronicles of the Riddick and its portrayal of the Necromancers conquering of new planetary worlds visually showed on the big screen what the Borg should have been presented visually -- but couldn't afford to -- due to the bean counting studio heads and executives at Paramount Pictures Studios when they greenlit Star Trek: First Contact back in 1995. :(

For the right amount of money, that "sell out" is likely to bang any caucasian actor on-screen.
