another new season 2 trailer and poster

Same place the Guardian of Forever, the Genesis Device and the Whale Probe were in the TNG era.

The Genesis Device was mentioned offhandedly in DS9, when there was a bomb which contained proto-matter.

Regardless, handwavium is permissible if it's used to tell a good story. The bigger issue here is that the writers still seem to be following the Season 1 format that raising the stakes somehow makes for better viewing. Star Trek in TV format is typically not an "epic" show. It's character and issue driven.

Ugh...I don't feel confident about this season now.

1. The "end of all sentient life in the galaxy" line shows they're needlessly upping the stakes again. It's a prequel - we know the worst-case isn't going to happen. And upping the stakes through the "almost destruction" of all life in the multiverse and the "almost bombardment" of Earth did nothing for Season 1. THIS ISN'T A MOVIE - IT'S TV. TREAT IT LIKE A TV SHOW!

2. Georgiou openly talking about Section 31 - and Pike, Burnham, and Tyler knowing about it - brazenly conflicts with what Trek has said about the organization in the past.

Yes, TNG's "Best of Both Worlds" (Borg want to Assimilate Earth) was one of the most unpopular TNG episodes in franchise history..oh, wait.

And DS9's whole Dominion War story (Changelings and their allies want to conquer and subjugate the entire Alpha Quadrant and te Federation) made DS9 one of the most reviled Star Trek franchise series in Star Trek media history...again...oh, wait. <--- That went on for nearly 3 seasons AFTER Worf was added in DS9 S4 and the Klingon made 'enemies' of the Federation again until near the end of S5.

IDK - It just seems people are trying (yet again) to find something to complain about because somehow the setup isn't some old man sitting at a conference table extolling the virtues of some Federation policy or the Federations love of exploration surrounded by like minded officers all agreeing with him.

How horrible they want to tell a sweeping story with a mix of action, adventure, and perhaps some contemplation here and there - the HORROR!

Maybe 31 is driven underground by their excesses in this story so that by DS9, they’re just a rumour.

You mean after three seasons of smaller stories? We have yet to get any smaller stories from Discovery. There's been no build-up, they just swing from one universal cataclysm to the next. They should have just had Discovery spore-drive home to deal with V'ger and the Whale Probe. Who the fuck needs the Enterprise?

In the non canon novels they do operate like that. Going underground for a certain time and reappearing when a new threat emerges.

Both of these bothered the hell out of me, too. Particularly the first one. I liked it better when it seemed like season 2 would be about a weird thing and the crew investigating it because it's weird, cue struggle and personal growth as a result.

Granted that this is partially a new creative team this season, but that seemed like the kind of story they wanted to tell in season 1 anyway. They never really engaged with the larger ramifications of the Klingon war and preferred to just use it as a catalyst for Burnahm to...something, somehow. It wasn't clear. But I think it was supposed to be a character arc.

I had hopes they were gonna cut out the middleman this time and give us a premise that didn't really have stakes outside of what it meant to the characters involved. You know, like a drama. Oh well.

I see season two will still be The Michael Burnham show since her head is bigger than everyone else’s on the poster, including trek legends like Spock and Pike. Anyone expecting S2 to be any better than S1 while be disappointed....

Huh? All we know was that in the 24th century (about 120 years after the events about to be shown in ST: D S2) - Section 31 wasn't generally known about by many in Starfleet. BUT, there have ALWAYS been people in Starfleet who knew and worked with Section 31 - especially during the Dominion War (in fact a well known Admiral who was also working with Sisko.)

Also, given Captain Pike's history (the Talosian incident) - he could have been made aware of Section 31 at some point after that, or again, given it's 120 years earlier, perhaps Section 31 wasn't as clandestine as it was by the 24th century.

Nothing remains static for all time. Things change.

Yes, TNG's "Best of Both Worlds" (Borg want to Assimilate Earth) was one of the most unpopular TNG episodes in franchise history..oh, wait.

1. They waited until the end of the third season to do that.
2. The second part of the two-parter was widely considered to be mediocre. Hell, the second part of every TNG two parter other than Chain of Command was generally crap. Fucking up the conclusion of a two-parter isn't a big deal. Fucking up the conclusion to a season arc is, which is why Season 1 didn't work for Discovery.
3. Aside from the effects on Picard's psyche which were seen in the following episode (Family) it was basically quickly dropped.

The Dominion War stuff was always interspesed with lighter fare like the Ferengi episodes or In The Cards. Not to mention the best characterization in Trek. So there was something for everyone.

Not to mention the stakes of losing the war against the Dominion were potentially far, far lower than the destruction of all sentient life. Plenty of planets in the Gamma Quadrant occupied by the Dominion seemed to be semi-decent places to live.

IDK - It just seems people are trying (yet again) to find something to complain about because somehow the setup isn't some old man sitting at a conference table extolling the virtues of some Federation policy or the Federations love of exploration surrounded by like minded officers all agreeing with him.

The earlier trailers implied that we were going to get more of a weird exploration-based Trek this season which explored deeper issues like the matter of faith vs. reason. This trailer implies lots of combat (ship-to-ship and hand-to-hand) and existential threats to all life. When you add in the Klingons, the spore stuff, and the focus on Micheal, it just looks like Season 1 all over again. And I didn't think Season 1 worked that well at all.

Sonequa Martin-Green is the star of the show. It makes sense that she is the featured character on a poster.

She shouldn’t be. It should be the whole crew getting equal exposure. If there needs to be a main star, it should be the captain; just like every other Star Trek series...I mean every proper Star Trek series
