Eh, it was like two things. This was the guy who performed open heart surgery on a Vulcan, afterall. And was inclined to make the occasional jab at Spock's internal organ arrangement.

Pon farr's a pretty big thing. Might be nice to know that your first officer might suddenly go into a mating frenzy at any moment so you can prepare to relieve him of duty/arrange to be near enough to his betrothed to alleviate his suffering/what medical interventions might help.
