You Are The Captain #10

Those don't seem to exist in the Trek-verse.

Which is a pity, really. Could have led to a great technobabble scene at the very least.

('The universe now exists in two states of a ship having crashed here in the past, and not having crashed here in the past, not quite simultaneously, but in alternating Planck time intervals.')

As Captain, I would divert all resources to survival. I have read the file on Captain Rudy Ransom and know how returning home at any cost is not an option. I have read the file on Khan Noonien Singh and the detailed analysis of his followers' settlement on Ceti Alpha V in order to learn adaptation strategies for planetary catastrophe. I would create a task force assigned to expanding sensor and comms capability. I would remind the crew to hold fast to our ideals yet give them permission to have fun exploring this strange new world we find ourselves on. I would put all crew on alert to appearances and modus operandi of temporal agents, as such appearances indicate efforts to uphold timeline integrity. If we're here by mistake, they'll do what they can to correct that. If not, we're now a part of history if we can't rescue ourselves.

That's why it pays to be well-versed in other crewmembers' logs. Eventually, you begin to amass quite a set of precedents for how to deal with situations nobody has experienced before.

Well, just the highlights, anyway - for wild situations like this, it pays to have something to consult for advice on what worked and what didn't. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it...or become a part of it retroactively.

Isn't that SOP for Star Trek and Starfleet?
"Mister Spock, run a search through the Library Computer and see what you can find."

I meant to the extent that any professional stays up to date on current events which may affect them.
Again, how do you know what's relevant. especially on a Galactic scale? Gets into "needs of the plot" range where character X just happens to know about thing Y to solve problem Z.

I suppose on a ship of a certain number, the chances that at least one person aboard knows a little about a niche subject increases, albeit microscopically.

The ship's historian likely oversees the log library when not consulting on historical matters, making her both the historian assigned to the ship and the person maintaining the ship and crew's history.

Okay, so perhaps she collates logs into an official historical log that gives an overview rather than everyone's individual input.
I think she just studies history and related topics. Then when needed, applies that knowledge to the mission at hand. McGivers, Palamas and Aster where probably all in the same department.
Palamas says her "particular specialties include ancient civilizations, relics, and myths." Not too different than McGivers.

I suppose the distinction may be that one studies and applies recorded known history, while the other studies new, unknown history.

Anyway, back to the dilemma at hand. I suppose it could also be a unique opportunity to get a better perspective on what may have made the planet so barren to begin with, and how to prevent it from happening on other worlds.

Attempt to find a way to time travel back to where I came from using the same kind of luck that exists in Star Trek, if not, settle down on the planet for the time being when gathering resources to survive and lay as low as possible.
