Yesterday's Enterprise as Star Trek: Generations

I remember reading somewhere that Berman wished they could have held that episode for the first TNG movie.
Cinefantastique quoted Berman as saying that. I want to say it was in the Star Trek VI issue, in a sidebar on where the movie franchise would go from there.

With some modifications, it could have worked out nicely. The changed timeline being the biggest concern.

Perhaps if Q were tied in and he protected the timeline so the "correct" Enterprise D and Enterprise A would work together

While I'd have love to have seen Q in the movies, you don't need him for that particular purpose. You could easily have the E-D protected from the timeline changes by it's proximity to the temporal rift, as in First Contact or City on the Edge of Forever. Or, perhaps the E-D itself is somehow tied into the formation of the rift. Or some such other technobabble.

Okay, a little "parallel universe" here to consider.

It's 1993 or thereabouts. TNG is coming to an end, and the writers are trying to come up with a film that will bridge the generations of TOS and TNG.

However, "Yesterday's Enterprise" never happened.

The idea is bandied about, and all are agreed that the crews of the Enterprise-A and the Enterprise-D will meet via time travel.

So how would the story have been modified for a full-length feature? And one involving the bridging of the generations and continuance of the film franchise?

Let's see some ideas.

I just mentioned this in another thread without realizing someone had done this--no wonder I got no reactions!
Nothing to add, but it would have been 10x better than Gen. even if they had just copied Yesterdays... exactly and added more action.

It's an interesting idea, but in all honesty, YE really works in the context of a larger show with a fan base. In other words, YE only works best if you're a fan of ST, familiar with its history -- the fact that several Starfleet ships bear the name "Enterprise."

Surely, some of the ideas posted in this thread are superior to the movie we got, GEN. And I agree TUC was a good send-off for the original crew, and too bad it couldn't have stayed that way. Then we wouldn't have gotten Kirk's lame death, or the lame destruction of the E-D.

Although if we did superimpose the main plotline of Y-E and had the E-A having to go back in time to face its destruction to preserve the timeline, how cool and dramatic an ending to Kirk & Co. would that have been? Of course, you would have had to keep Spock, McCoy, & Scotty off the ship to conform with the later TNG eps featuring all three.
