Wrath of Khan Releases

Hi guys,

Am I right in thinking there are 3 versions of the film out? Original, Director's cut #1 (DVD) and #2 (BD)?

Also, apart from technical quality improvement, what is the main difference between both Director's Cuts? I know Kirk's "this is my son" line to Spock is missing on cut #2...anything else?

Thanks!

I believe there were some minor editing differences here and there, as well.

Also, the initial release of #2 on BD had an erroneous still frame of the back of Sulu's head. This was recalled, and Paramount issued replacements at no cost, with the shot corrected. I wonder if it might be worth something someday.

Do you know what these were?

The 'scientists have always been pawns to the military' scene is a different take of it used for some reason, and is not as good as the original in my view. I think the turbo lift scene with kirk and saavik is different too, and there's one or two other bits as well as the extended scenes.

The version with the alternate turbolift take was not on DVD. It was only on the so-called ABC version of the movie.
The only difference between the DVD director's cut and the Blu-ray director's cut Is the muting of the line where Kirk says "that young man he's my son"

They also dropped at least one touch-up that had been quietly added to the earlier version, the stairs in the hanging miniature (Kirk and Spock outside the simulator) were digitally smoothed in the previous release.

That's not correct.
The smoothed over stairs that you're referring to were on the previous Blu-ray of the theatrical cut NOT on the DVD director's cut. The previous poster had asked for differences between the DVD director's cut and the Blu-ray director's cut.

To clarify there have been three official versions of the movie released on home video. The theatrical version
the DVD director's cut and
the BluRay director's cut.
The so-called ABC version has never been released on home video although many people still have taped copies of it. And the first pressing of the Blu-ray director's cut that has the error certainly wouldn't be considered an "alternate cut" but simply an error never meant to be released.
I guess theoretically you could say that there are two versions of the theatrical cut. One of the Version that always existed and then the BluRay of the theatrical cut that has the smoothed over stairs.

What's that?
The one where the title sequence says "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan" instead of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan."

It wasn't a direct sequel to TMP, after all. It was a totally unrelated story.

I still want to see a version where Saavik was established as half Romulan and by the end of movie Kirk hints at David and Saavik being a couple.

I would just be happy seeing the deleted scenes again from the UCLA black and white rough cut.

Wanna buy mine??

As far as I know/remember, home consumption releases are as follows:

Theatrical release pan and scan on VHS/Beta
Theatrical release letterboxed on VHS/Laserdisc
ABC Network Movie version with added footage
Directors Cut release DVD (two disk special edition)
Theatrical release BD
Remastered Directors Cut / Theatrical release BD set

There are a ton more releases than that. There was an early DVD of the theatrical cut that came before the 2-disc version.

My wallet wishes there were only that many Khan releases.

I had the stereo VHS, the Dolby VHS, a widescreen VHS , a pan and scan Laserdisc, a widescreen Laserdisc, 2 DVD versions, 2 Blu-ray versions. a Laserdisc with Dolby and one with "AC-3" (5.1) sound. If you count the re-releases with slight upgrades on the audio there are a ton.

I only ever saw the ABC version growing up on VHS and had read the novelization multiple times so when I saw the DVD version for the first time I kept wondering where all these missing bits were....
