Ultimately I think the whole “saucer separation” thing made the most sense specifically for the Galaxy class because of its large number of Civilians. But the idea of separable mission pods is good, and very much something Nova class ships and even earlier classes would be capable of.
I agree that separation should have been done more, especially outside of TNG context. If the star drive is alone is the Galaxy in fighting trim, then the ships during the Dominion war should have parked their saucers for the duration! And the Oddesy should have left her saucers at DS9…
