When Will 'Star Trek' Get a Cinematic Universe?

Eh. I don't really see the need. There's already a shared universe for Trek. It's called "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager" and "Enterprise."

Public opinion is a fickle bitch. Maybe one day there will be enough interest and demand for new Star Trek and other space sci-fi on TV, but that day isn't today and it doesn't seem to be coming any time soon.

That the thing. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor ... they made the MCU accessible and even sexy. That's why Agents of SHIELD and the other shows are happening now.

When JJ made Star Trek sexy, two things happened. Those movies raked it in at the box office and hard core fans declared it unwatchable.

Perhaps a better way to answer this question would be "If there's a Star Trek cinematic universe, are you prepared for it to be more of the JJ universe or something new that isn't anything like what TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise were?" Because that's most likely what's going to happen.

Hardcore fans didn't deem it unwatchable. Some people didn't like it and then the loonies took clipboards and wrote down canon violations. It was a profitable and critically successful couple of movies.

Clipboard Loonies? That's a subset of fandom I wasn't aware of--or hadn't put a name to--yet.

After seeing J.J's first Trek film I was certainly ready to see his second.

So long as the script is good, I'm willing to watch another Trek by J.J., or yet another Trek timeline if such appears.

There was a guy in '09 who said the only way he would go see the movie is if he took a clipboard to write down all the "cannon violations." I laughed so hard but he was oh so serious.

I love Star Trek, and the Star Trek universe, but there can be too much of a good thing. I've become less interested in the Marvel universe because there's just a glut of it now.

I don't want that to happen to Star Trek.

Gonna have to read that whole thread. Looks like fun. :techman:

I still see that prevailing falsity that Star Trek movies have to be multi-million dollar epics just for the sake of it. You could create a "Cinematic Universe", which is nothing other than creating a continuity between several films, on a smaller scale (or shall I say budget) as well.

They did it in the 90s in Trek, but they didn't take it far enough.

Even Stargate had better crossovers that involved the major players in interesting, eventful stories. We NEVER got to see Picard and Sisko together in action, even though the possibilities for such an event would have been endless.

The Marvel cinematic universe started with one film and small steps. They did have a plan/roadmap, though. But it could have stopped at any moment, had it not been for Robert Downey Jr. popularity as Iron Man. And they kept it flexible. Agents of Shield was only created because people liked Agent Coulson.

People immediately asked for a Kelvin movie or TV show with Captain Robau and Commander Kirk, because they were interesting. I still don't know why they didn't at least try it. They try a lot of shit, but they didn't do that.

I do, bring on the Star Trek glut.

Two (or three) series at the same time, year after year. Hundreds upon hundreds of episodes. More opportunities for fantastic Trek, good Trek and okay Trek.

Even a vast amount of average Trek is better than one movie every four years. Pour it on.

:)

Interesting ideas for new Trek have appeared in these threads-perhaps each one could have its own mini-series? :techman:

TNG set a precedent for setting a Trek series during a different time period, using new characters.

And, of course, J.J. made the precedent of using another timeline-at least for the movies.

TPTB saw what happens when the market is oversaturated with mediocre Trek. They won't make that mistake again.

Even if all the future holds is more mediocre Trek, we won't be inundated with it. ;)

Star Trek probably won't get a cinematic universe. It belongs back on television, and even then, I don't think we need multiple series. The best we can reasonably hope for, is one series that becomes successful.

In today's environment, "it's shit but at least it's Star Trek" isn't enough to keep things going. I certainly won't watch a show I find to be of poor quality, even if it's from a franchise I love.
