What is your saddest episode of Doctor who?

I think I have to agree that the saddest episode of Doctor Who for me is The Girl in the Fireplace. It's one of the few times Moffat doesn't undercut his own tragic moment with a last-minute twist ("Well that's alright then!" or otherwise) and the episode is so much better for it. Yes, her death is part of the historical record but he could have pulled sci-fi shenanigans there and didn't.

Other moments that move me to sad tears:
  • Adric's death is pretty heartwrenching.
  • The Doctor erasing (well, locking away) Donna's memories of him (even with the reboot series' events).
  • Wilf sobbing as the Doctor departs for his regeneration.
  • The Doctor's farewell to Susan.

I'll be honest, DW as a whole doesn't really hit me at an emotional level. The classic series, as much as I love it, just wasn't wired that way. The modern series tried but often fell short by using overly bombastic, manipulative methods.

The closest time was Logopolis back in the early 80s. I was a younger fan in the States but I didn't know anything about the show's history. Tom was the only Doctor I knew, and I had absolutely no idea that the character regenerates. So, it was a complete shock when it happened.

Planet of the spiders was my first regeneration episode, and i can remember feeling i did not want him to go, and was upset when he did, but thankfully Jim'll fix it was on right after it to make us all feel better again. Lol
