What games do you miss, PC, console, or handheld?

Ultima Underworld 1 & 2, Populous and the text adventures set in the realm of Quendor (Zork 0, 1, 2, 3, Beyond Zork, Enchanter, Sorcerer, Spellbreaker, and Wishbringer)

The first set of games set in a shared world IIRC. The Zork games, the Enchanter games and Wishbringer were all in different parts of the world and had some of the coolest puzzles (especially the time travel ones).

POPULOUS

That was my jam on the Sega Master System. Tried it years later on PC but it just didn't feel the same and I don't think there has been any recent version of this game that I know of.

I would love to see Graphic Adventures make a come back. I've long preferred the 3rd person type where you see the character on the screen vs the 1st person genre as with Myst, but I think the VR medium would make for a very interesting way to have the player immersed in the world. I would love to see all of Sierra's Quest series of games get an evolved treatment via VR.

  • Mil flight sims. Narrative driven, not as high fidelity as "DCS" and not as arcadey as "Ace Combat".
  • Mech sims. MW5 Clans was OK, but not great. More narrative variety (something different than BattleTech/MechWarrior setting). AA / AAA level. (Metaltech/Starsiege / Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri / Heavy Gear / Shogo: Mobile Armor Division / Shattered Steel)
  • Tank simulations (M1 Tank Platoon / Tank: The M1A1 Abrams Battle Tank Simulation / Armored Fist)
  • Submarine simulations (Silent Service / Silent Hunter)
  • FPS / RTS hybrid (Battlezone)
  • AA and AAA strategy and tactic games. Narrative driven, large variety of settings (from Sci-Fi to fantasy) (Battle Isle / Command & Conquer / Dune / StarCraft / Warcraft)
  • Space sims. Bring back space sims: X-Wing/TIE Fighter (Squadrons was bad) / Wing Commander / FreeSpace / I-War (Independence War) / Tachyon: The Fringe / Star Crusader / Inferno / Epic
  • Star Trek space sims: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy / Star Trek: Klingon Academy / Star Trek: Bridge Commander. No VR gimmick.

I miss manuals. I got Star Trek: Judgement Rites on Steam ages ago and jumped straight in and had no clue how to do a single thing. Luckily it comes with a PDF so I could learn the keys.

Going way way way back, I remember my SNES with Mario World, and the manual having a cute little story as well as artwork and profiles of some of the baddies.

They were scene-setters, and although I get that games have progressed to the point you learn what to do on the fly and they tell you the story in-game, I have a nostalgic thing for those little instruction booklets of old.

Some great games there. The original I-War completely defeated me but I got on a lot better with the sequel.

re: mil flight sims, I used to play some of those early-90s Microprose sims. Looking back I think they had just the right amount of realism to feel authentic, without being too horrendously complex. I've no idea if there's anything like that out there today.

Yeah, had a lot of fun with those back in the day.

I am trying to find a game that I swear wasn't a figment of my imagination.

The game has a number of objects from a car to a hellfire missile and lets you disassemble them
