Crimson Skies. OMG many hours playing this trying to finish it, this was when games didn't hold your hand.

In The 1st Degree, FMVV game with multiple endings, choices used Apple Quicktime, now that was a pain on PC.

Star Trek A Final Unity

I miss Black & White. I adored the game back in the day. It refuses to run on any of my modern laptops, and my Win 95 comp that I've kept around is just a tiny bit too old to run it. Ack.

I've tried pretty much everything people suggest to get it to run on different systems (Win 7, Win 10, Win 11) but nothing has worked. My laptops weren't/aren't gaming laptops tho, so maybe that has something to do with it also. But still - thanks!

i still run windows 7 on everything, on purpose, and i have one old XP computer that runs a lot of emulators and displays on a CRT. between those two i haven't found much that won't run.

What about the Wing Commander games?

Those were really finicky to get going

My Win7 laptop got closest to running the game - it showed the title screen, which is more than any of the others did  But yeah, there are so many editions and variations of those modern systems, it's often impossible to find the exact thing that prevents an older game from running. (This is one reason why my brief love affair with PC gaming ended with Win 98 and why I'm a console only player nowadays.)

i used to have to install all of these visual basic libraries, each year there were different ones, 32 and 64 bit, andit was always something different that various games were looking for. a friend of mine that does this for a living, has a thumbdrive that automatically installs all of them at once. it very well may include whatever missing thing is keeping your game from running. i will see if i can ask him what exactly he is doing lol.

Is any of the info here useful? There's something about DRM that doesn't work on modern windows, but can be removed with a fan patch.

Might just be easiest to buy them again on gog.com.

A text adventure called Federation on the ZX Spectrum 128. My version had pictures of the rooms in the spaceship you were exploring, which the versions downloadable don't.

I fell into the hype with that one, and I remember being quite disappointed. It very hyped up at the time of release, being one of the first games that was covered widely by the media. There were lots of interesting concepts in that game, but it basically boiled down to being an RTS with a unique way to control it, and being that I wasn't used to RTS games at all, I felt it was both underwhelming and extremely frustrating, and the controls added to that frustration.

I miss handheld games with VFD displays..... Had quite a collection but over the years they gradually died, I think capacitors getting old and leaky

As a young lad I really liked this game on Windows called "The Humans," which was a puzzle thing kind of like the Lemmings games but with cavemen and dinosaurs.

And before the Sims we had Little Computer People in the 80s. I remember playing that on a Commodore 64 and it was fun
