Top 5 Characters in DS9

Hi

I would like to list my favorite characters in DS9 and why i think they should be there:

#1: Weyoun - Probably the best villain of them all, he is cold, ruthless but yet kind and generous when he needs to be. He has made me laugh and sometimes i felt sorry for him, he has got to be the best character on DS9 and Jefferey Combs plays him magnificently, he is probably the best actor on DS9.

#2: Garak - Very mysterious character which i think added an edge to the show. Over the series you see him open up and really start to fit in and become one of the guys ;). I love the way he manipulates people by talking utter rubbish and making it believable. He made me laugh when he tried to lie his way out of dangerous situations and gets knocked out because of it.

#3: Quark - Brilliant character who has added so much to the show, without him the show would be empty. The funniest moments of DS9 are when he forms the ferengi squad, and also becomes a female, made me laugh. It's a shame him and Odo never said that they liked each other even till the end they never give the other the satisfaction, o well.

#4: Odo - At first i didn't like Odo (sad to say) but as the show progressed he grew on me and i ended up really liking the guy, at times you feel very sorry for him and other times you feel frustrated at him for not getting it on with Kira lol. I feel disappointed that the show didn't really show the full potential of Odo being a shape shifter, they could have made him do more tricks.

#5 Gul Dukat - Hes one of those characters that you hate and love him at the same time. Hes made the show so much more interesting, you don't know whose team hes playing for, i mean the guy keeps on switching sides which adds great depth to the show.

I like all of the characters on DS9 but those are the top 5, feel free to post your top 5 and tell me what you think of mine and yours.

One of the greatest strengths of DS9 is that characters like Garak, Martok, Weyoun, Dukat (and so many others) can go head-to-head with any of the main characters like Kira, Bashir, Sisko, Odo, etc.

The characters are fully realized and are as "real" as the next one, no matter if they are main characters, secondary, guest stars, or whatever. It is so great.

Top Five? I don't know...there are so many, all so great...

I agree with the list in the OP exactly.

I would add Kai Winn to that list too, though. 6-way tie for the best of the best IMO. All of them fascinatingly nuanced characters and immaculately played by master actors.

#1 has to be Garak. Andy Robinson did so much with a character that was already wonderfully written. It's almost a shame he wasn't made into a regular as planned in the final season, but we ended up seeing plenty of him, anyway.

The rest are harder to choose.

Gul Dukat was a great character through the episode Waltz, but after that he was a caricature of himself.

Damar was a character I really liked in the end, but it took him a while to become more than window dressing on the show.

Quark was usually great, although he was involved in the occasional bad Ferengi episode (of which most I liked, but there's little to be redeemed in Profit and Lace).

I think both Worf and O'Brien had great character arcs on Deep Space Nine, but since they were imported from The Next Generation, I don't know how you'd classify them.

Jeffery Combs is great in any role. I love the season where he played three characters.

I like all of the characters on Deep Space Nine, but if I had to choose five...

(These are in no particular order)

Garak/Dr. Bashir
Chief O'Brien
Quark/Rom
Jake
Commander Sisko

1.) Sisko

2.) Garak

3.) Bashir

4.) O'Brein

5.) Martok

The list goes on and on, there are so much to choose from.

Garek
Odo
Sisko
Jadzia (Despite losing some like for her over the years, I still thought she was pretty good)
Kira

Weyoun: for being entertaining throughout
O'Brien: For being a solid lead character that stayed believeable throughout the shows run.
Damar: For having a long running arc that kept character believability, that is to say that you can honestly believe Damar is forced to do these things.
Odo: literally the only thing i didnt like was the Kira romance and how the character lost his edge during that. other than that, i found his search for his people honest and touching and the discovery and pain associated to be true to the character.
Garak: for being such a murderous, devious, slightly fey little rascal. While i didnt like how later seasons dropped the idea that he might not be entirely trustworthy, i did really like what came before.

I cant put Dukat on this list because to me the entire point of him was that he could be either an asset or an enemy. On a show that prided itself on its shades of grey, it is odd that in later seasons everyone turned out to be either a good guy or bad guy. I thought that Dukat's role in the final arc especially to be embarassing and forgetful about everything that made the character great.

Honorable mention: That Jem'Hadar third from Rocks and Shoals. In spite of betrayal, he was an honorable soldier to the last and its a testament to the writing and acting that the audience understood and respected his decision. Even in death, they inflicted casualties.

My top five:

Sisko
Garak
Martok
Kira
O'Brien

Cause I'm a homer.

However, broadly, I very much like Weyoun, Worf, Jake, Jadzia, Quark, Odo and Dukat as realized characters as well. It was a wonderful ensemble.

I'd like to change my list. I can't believe I forgot so many characters. Must be in part because I haven't seen DS9 in a long time:

1. Martok
2. Garak
3. Sisko
4. Odo
6. Wayoun

The reason why it's top 5 is because then everyone will just end up listing all the characters which would be boring.

1. Bashir

2. Damar

3. Kira

4. Odo

5. Garak

I think Bashir is the best because of how much he changes during the series. He starts off as the optimistic young doctor who descends the ladder as different things happen to him (i.e. the war, genetic secret found out). As the series progresses he becomes more cynical and angry especially when the section 31 arc begins.

I hated Bashir at the start he seemed like he was out of his depth, very shy and looked rather stupid. As the show progressed, he formed the relationship with O'brien which at times had homosexual moments lol, but i ended up liking Bashir, a key character in DS9.
