The Tattooed Terror

Queen Mab

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Does Chakotay have tattoos anywhere else on his body?

Why was he called The Tattooed Terror at the academy, if not. (Tsunkatse)

He wouldn't have had the face tattoo then. (Tattoo)

In the Blu-Ray releases, do they show Chakotay top-naked and with other tattoos?

He probably got the nickname because he has a big prominent tattoo covering half his face, and tattoos seem to have gone out of style after the 21st century.

I don't think it was said exactly when he got the tattoo. He might have had it in the academy

He didnt get the tattoo till 2368 when his father died, after his time at the academy. Hence the question.

This is stated in my opening post!

Chakotay got the tattoo to honor his father after his father were killed by the Cardassians because he wanted to continue the fight for him. So he did not have the tattoo when he was at the Academy. Therefore the talk about the nickname is one of Voyager's many contradictions.

Just another example that the "writers" didn't have a clue what they were doing.

Is there a canon date for when he got the tattoo?

As for the comment insulting the writers, i personally disagree with the insult. I think with very few exceptions they were great. They gave us a great show with good character development and great stories. The writers gave me my favorite trek show so i would not insult them at all.

I have solved your query.

Firstly, he doesn't have any notable tattoos from the chest up. He grew up on a colony on the Cardassian border. He went on a trip to Earth with his old man as a young teen. Shortly after returning, he left the colony and was accepted into SF(at 15 or 16 years old.) His Dad died at some point around this time. He got the tattoo sometime after his dad died. He returned to his colony sometime after his Dad died also.

Here's the important part. In Tsunkatse, they never say that Chakotay boxed at the academy, OR that he had this nickname as a boxer. He could have had this nickname while in the Maquis, and B'elanna is familiar with it. Or it's also possible she made up the nickname right there as part of her teasing of Kim.
Here's the conversation:

PARIS: You should trust him, Harry. Chakotay knows a thing or two about southpaws.
TORRES: He was twenty three and oh as a light heavyweight.
CHAKOTAY: Twenty three and and one, actually. A Nausicaan with a mean right hook.
KIM: You think that's bad? Try taking a parrises mallet to the ribs.
CHAKOTAY: I didn't know you played.
KIM: Three time Academy champion. Now, that's a tough sport.
CHAKOTAY: I boxed a few parrises players in my day.
TORRES: And?
CHAKOTAY: Let's just say they went back to playing parrises squares after that.
KIM: Oh, was that a challenge, Commander?
CHAKOTAY: I wouldn't want to put my Ops officer out of commission, now, would I?
KIM: I can take a punch.
TORRES: Careful, Harry. Legend has it that the tattooed terror has put more men in Sickbay than the Ankaran flu.
PARIS: Yeah, you wouldn't want to bruise your clarinet fingers.

Now, I know that in a later episode, he is shown boxing with Boothby as his coach, but there's nothing in this conversation is connecting Chakotay-->Academy-->boxing-->Academy nickname.

He's nude in episode "Tattoo", I'm not going to watch that episode to find out though :-S

They didn't even count how many crew members died. You think they kept notes about what year Chakotay got the Tattoo?

It's probably a lot easier to get - and remove - tattoos.

Maybe it's just like colouring your hair, which also seems to be out of fashion for some reason.

In the Star Trek future upstanding citizens all listen to classical music or jazz and they NEVER dye their hair any unnatural, lurid colours. It's just how proper and good the future is going to be. The only reason Chak gets a tattoo is because, culture. No one has them just for fun! That wouldn't go well with the jazz!

Imagine Chak without it

I imagine in a post-scarcity society only the classics remain and 20th-21st popular culture has fallen away.

Nope, see: Zephram Cochrane. Oogie Boogie-into space. But he was obviously a degenerate and Starfleet had to whitewash all his interesting bits before wheeling him out to future generations as emulatory.

The Federation is a conformist and rather conservative society.

And that's just the way it is.

Zephram Cochrane Lived during the 21st century.

Here's how Cha-Ko-Tay got the nickname.

It was Crewman Chell who started the nickname.

When I read the script for the situation which Prax provides in a post above, I get a more clear picture of the situation.

There is nothing at all which states that Chakotay was called "The Tattooed Terror" at the academy. In fact, it's just a comment from Torres which indicates that she came up with the nickname there and then.

When I watched the episode many years ago, I didn't react to the comment either and I didn't think about the comment as some nickname Chakotay might have had back inthe Academy where he obviously didn't have a tattoo.

I also withdraw my comment in an erlier post about "writers who didn't have a clue about what they were doing". In this case I was wrong.

I think it's perfectly plausible that B'Elanna just made that name up on the spot. They have a good friendship and I can see her teasing him like that
