The OFFICIAL ST:TNG Theater Screenings In July 2012 thread

Hey guys today is the day!

I waited to see if i had to work Monday evening and this week checked and both NYC theaters are sold out. The one on 42nd street has a 2nd screening at 10:15PM which is also sold out.

I wonder if in November there will be another cinema event for 2 episodes of season 2? Surely the money CBS Home video gets from the cinema event can goto recovering the ROI.

I'm looking forward to this one (ordered the tickets last week and picked them up a couple days ago). It's apparently two-and-a-half hours, so there must be about an hour of extras.

Here in Toronto almost all the screenings are sold out. Only one theatre here still has tickets and that's in suburban area. Guess I'm going to have to get to the theatre an hour or two early to get a good seat.

Just got back. Had a blast, episodes looked good though Where No One... was a bit dark.

In fairness, a lot of the scenes were low light I think by design.

All I can say is wow. This is as good as a 25 year old series is gonna look and it looked amazing. Seeing it on the big screen, you can really appreciate the motion picture like quality of the ILM-filmed stock shots of the E-D. It's the same shots we've seen a million times before but a whole new experience.

Both episodes looked great, especially WNOHGB. What's neat is those effects were done on film so they are really well preserved. The crystalline entity looked amazing as well. They really nailed the original but just updated it, which was the point.

The episodes themselves held up well, but it just made me want season 3 and beyond even more.

The evening itself was really well structured. They started off with the new documentary on the making of the blu rays and the remastering. Then came WNOHGB, followed by the new doc on the creation of TNG. To be honest, I liked the second doc even more than the first because you see costume test shots of the whole cast which has never been seen before. As they are showing the test shots, it is overlayed with the actor talking about the role, how they got it, etc. They also interspersed gag reel clips that we've all seen before, but a few that have never been released to the public, including a hilarious one with Worf in test makeup next to Rick Berman. I won't give it away. Then came Datalore, which holds up well. Finally, we get an extended version of the season 2 promo, including grainy VHS footage of the cut scenes from The Measure of a Man. Seeing a glimpse of never before seen footage gave me the chills! They also showed longer footage of Pulaski scenes and mentioned K'elyr while showing footage from The Emissary. They also showed extended footage from Eleemntary Dear Data. The show really did get better every year and, again, seeing this promo footage is really making me look forward to getting to the later stuff!

All in all, it was an incredible night and I look forward to receiving season one tomorrow!

Btw, I am pretty certain the shot of the enterprise coming toward the camera in the far off galaxy in WNOHGB (the one with the white sparkles shooting by) is CGI.

Mike, maybe you can confirm?

Edit:speaking of Mike, there were cool quick intros to each episode by Mike and Denise, including some interesting new bits of info on the episodes!

Fantastic....the sets not only hold up for bluray, they hold up for a big movie screen! Certain scenes looks like they were shot for movies...STNG looks awesome on film! Really a terrific night! The crowd applauded.

The shots of the Enterprise at the "edge of the universe" certainly looked to be a CGI replacement to me.

Just got back and I absolutely loved the evening. When I got into TNG nearly 20 years ago when I was in 8th grade and if you had told me I'd one day be watching two episodes of TNG in a movie theater in amazing detail I would have never believed you.

The episodes look pretty darn good all things considered, they're 25-year-old episodes being shown on a big screen and the filming/lighting methods used in the show back then wasn't too spectacular. But these episodes were a lot of fun, I enjoyed seeing Triangulum and the edge of the universe on the big-screen in HD, the ship look wonderful too.

The "worst" thing about the higher resolution and the big screen would be that some of the makeup prosthetics (particularly on The Traveler) don't hold up and much like in the improvements TOS has gotten as enters new mediums (even better quality TVs as it ran in syndication) stunt doubles stood out more.

But for me the real highlight of the evening was the BTS stuff from the DVDs in particular the screen and makeup tests for the actors (though no Pedo-Stache/Jheri-Curl Geordi), a very "less humanized" look for Worf's Klingon appearance and some great outtakes (something Trek has always held close to the chest.) Loved Spiner's Jimmy Stewart impression as he reads the dedication plaque on the Tsiolkovsky . And I had to applaud when Gene came on the screen at the beginning of one of the BTS features.

The round-table reunion of the cast set for the S2 DVD looks like it's going to be a blast to watch.

And, as I expected, two scenes from the audience got a big reaction. Number one being the background red-shirt in WNOHGB in the skant during Picard's all-ship hail and number two, of course, being "Shut up, Wesley!" from Picard and Crusher in Datalore. (Where the split screen effects also stand up well.)

Fun, fun, blast of night sitting with people who're certainly fans of the show and just enjoying it for a)the good show that is, b) this new format and unique presentation of it and c)those plenty of moments where the S1/S2 1987 cheese comes through. I mean it's hard not to laugh when Geordi calls the approaching Crystalline Entity a "boogie" or in how overly sitcom-like dickish Kazinsky acts. Not to mention one of Wesley ridiculous sweaters in WNOHGB.

Cast interviews were great, input from the Okudas was great.

Fun, and a blast. Can't say that enough. I'd love it if they did this for the release of each and every season (but I know they won't.) :( Can't wait until my set arrives tomorrow!

My theater was running behind on schedule, so when they finally had the projector rolling, it was using a stream from DISH NETWORK! I thought this was going to be on real film. :scream: I'm a little disappointed, but it was still fun to hang out with fellow Trekkies. :techman:

Initially the sound in our theater was a little low but it was eventually turned up. Didn't sound to me like it was using the 7.1 sound of the BD, though, as the sound wasn't very encompassing or dynamic it really sounded like it was coming from basic TV speakers.

Tinseltown in my area had Dish and DVR too. The recording was messed up at one point. The DVR came up with an error message that said it lost signal, and one part of the interviews were skipped. Then the projectionist started rewinding the darn thing and asked us what all was missing!

The black level didnt look like it was set correctly for the episodes and red uniforms still had a pinkish hue to them. Black level was sort of washed out, sort of like the old NTSC standard. The HD extras interviews looked fine though. Audio was sub-par, and veryy low in my theater. Hardly any surround to both episodes.

The volume was also a bit low in our theater. I actually turned to my girlfriend in the beginning and said "this could be a little louder."

I'll just have to crank it up at home.

To the people who went (I didn't go, decided to wait till I got the blu-rays) how was the attendance? Were the theaters sold out?

I always hear that TNG is becoming Dated, but with the blurays here and wondering how the attendance level is, it seems like TNG is as strong as ever. Being a fan of TNG over all the other Trek shows (Still love DS9 a slight second), it's great to know that TNG still has a following after all these years and countless reruns.

Hi,

So at the screenings they show Datalore, WNOHGB and *both*
documentaries?

Wow, so how long does the whole thing run?

CHeers!
(seeing this Thurs myself!)

What a great screening! It was magical seeing the Ent-D on the big screen. Our showing ran about 2.5 hours long, with the two documentaries. Loved the second one with the cast's screen tests. What a hoot!

The theater was almost full, just the front row empty...and I will echo earlier comments about the laughter, "Shut up, Wesley!" got a loud roar, the man in the skant got a big chuckle, and the out-takes were great, too! :guffaw:

So glad I saw this; I can only hope they'll show another two episodes of the second season before it's released.
