The Malon -- What think ye?

Most Voyager fans seem to dislike the Kazon. Many wanted to see fewer Borg and more Hirogen. But what about the Malon?

In Season 5, the galaxy's garbage men became a recurring Voyager antagonist. Thoughts? Reactions?

Better than Kazon, but still not optimum. Never really liked the Malon, somehow they could not reach me...Maybe it is because of the focusing to the garbage. You always hear Malon and think about Garbage. But we just saw a few of them, and I think the majority was different.

I thought they were the worst antagonists on the show (of the recurring ones).
I actually didn't see them as villains, they were more like a nuisance. A thorn in Voyager's side.
As for the Kazon, I quite liked them. I thought it was a good idea the first enemy Voyager made was not too powerful. It might have been too much for them if they had been.
Of course, I liked the Vidiians as well.
As for the Hirogen, they are my favourite villains ever. I wish they had figured in a lot more episodes. (I've already said elsewhere it's a real shame no VOY author has given us a good Hirogen-based novel. Not even a bad one.)
As for the Borg, they are my second favourite villains. I wish we had had three times as many episodes with them.
And although I didn't like the Mallon at all, I still preferred them to having zero recurring enemies during the last two seasons.

I didn't hate them. I thought the concept was interesting. I would have loved to see the rest of their society. In Juggernaught the Malon talked about their homeworld being clean and beautiful, it would be interesting to see that.

Asside from the Kazon I did enjoy when we saw an alien more than once on the show

Aside from the already mentioned aliens, I did like more alien-enemy races, which sadly did not appear much often. Following my list, the first one was the best:
- the Voth, best (kind of) enemy ever, even stronger than the borg
- Devore, sneaky, strong, intrigues, we want to see more of them
- Species 116, smart, probably the most intelligents, you do not want them as your enemy
- Hierarchy, called as an enemy, but if you are honest they could be your buddies to drink some beer with
- Vaadwaur, missed 1000 years, want to get this time back to dominate delta-quadrant
- USS Equinox, the best enemy is an enemy, you think is your friend/ally.
- Srivani, isnt it fun, to suffer experiments and not even knowing it?

They were one dimensional, villainous space garbage men. As others have said, seeing the other side of their society would have added much more.

As well as actually having Janeway end their pollution crisis.

I thought they were pretty dull, and I can't believe they ended up in three episodes.

They're definitely the least interesting part about Night.

They tried to help them with that, they were willing to share technology to that end but the Malon were not interested in it

It's been ages since I saw it, but wasn't that just the garbage men Malon rejecting the offer (because it would put them out of buisness) and not their government?

Yes it was because of business he said they make too much money from disposal to be interested in the technology

They said their homeworld was clean and beautiful (because they were dumping their toxic waste in the backyard of everyone else). But we never saw a Malon who wasn't sick from working with the waste, did we?

So, I kind of liked them. I think it's nice, once in a while, to see an adversary that isn't aggressive, warlike and imperialistic, but causes problems for the heroes for some other reason.

My favorite Star Trek race is the Klingons. But I feel like with the Klingons, Star Trek has its great war-and-conquest adversary. When another adversary is introduced, I want to see something different. The Kazon felt like poor Klingon copies.

With the Malon, I thought the political message, while a bit obvious and straightforward, was one that needed to be made and fit reasonably into the series.

The were a good idea for an episode or 2 but can't really sustain the analogy forever because then you start to think about how they can face Voyager's technology and still not be able to clean up their own messes.

Because they don't WANT to clean it up.

problem is voyager is returnig home, so she don't stay in the same portion of space that long. Especilly after season 4 beginning, whrn they star finding ways to travel hundreds or thausands of lightyears twice a season

They've only had a couple of jumps, and how is this a problem?

it's a problem because these just exclude a recurrent villain.
And they had jumps 7 times, 8 with endgame
Even with the jumps they still had several recurring villians. Kazon, Malon, Hirogen, 8472, Vidian, Borg, Seska

Their jumps were 9,500 light years in The Gift, 2,500 light years in The Void, 10,000 light years in Timeless, and 20,000 light years in Dark Frontier. So that's 4 major jumps...5 with Endgame.
