The Möbius Theory

Mojochi

Vice Admiral
Admiral
In "Time Squared" Worf postulates that the the anomaly which sends Picard back in time to the Enterprise is a Möbius, which he describes as a twist in the fabric of space where time becomes a loop, from which there is no escape

This description sounds almost exactly like the Temporal Causality Loop, from "Cause And Effect". So since both of these phenomena appear different in nature, are they different? Which one is the Möbius? Do you think they are both different variations of the same phenomenon, or do you think they are completely different phenomena, and then which if any do you think is best fitting of the description of the Möbius?

"Time Squared" is such a mess of an episode -- from story, to editing, to characters -- that I would discredit most of what it says. Therefore, I'd go along with the "Cause and Effect" phenomenon as the more likely candidate.

Wasn't "Time Squared" originally supposed to end with the revelation that Q was responsible for the whole thing? AFAIK, it was going to lead into "Q Who".

A stable time loop and a Mobius loop are the same thing pretty much, just that the former was dumbed down in name terms for the masses.

For that episode, when did Worf become versed enough in anything other then weapons to know what a mobius is in the first place?

When I was a kid I'd never heard the word "mobius" before. I thought Worf was talking about some ancient Klingon legend.

I think it was just his turn to hold the Exposition Ball.
Isn't Worf always bringing up spooky legend stuff that the whole crew dismisses without a second thought?:guffaw:

Anwar has the point I was really raising. "Cause & Effect" was just a much much much better reworking of Time Squared, with the same phenomenon being used again, but with less fear of the audience being completely stupid about it, such that it needn't be shrouded in mysticism, like Time Squared was

Probably didn't have enough lines in the episode, that usually explains why unlikely characters suddenly become plot-useful experts.

I agree, except in Cause and effect they find out they have been trapped in the loop for 17.4 days. WTF!?! If it's time repeating then no time should have passed as its resetting to the exact same point.

Therefore the weaker episode wins although Cause and Effect was lots of fun to watch

The Enterprise and Bozeman were caught IN the loop.
It's more like a pocket of wonky time, not quite relative to the rest of the universe.
