Last of Us Season 2 is here, finally!

After the massive success of season 1 it took long enough for season 2 to roll around but here it is.

Let's discuss and for the love of god (even though it's marked) - please don't spoil the story for everybody if you have played the games. And who knows, maybe the show will throw some curveballs compared to the game.

I'll be watching later today so my thoughts will follow but i already saw the intro scene with Abby -. amazing!

The actresses playing Dina and Abby have impressed so far. I think we're in store for some good stuff!

Man, what a great start into the season.

Set up of villain/opponent Abby ( i love Kaitlin Dever) and a 5 year timejump as we see a huge rift between Joel and Ellie has developed between them.

Ellie has become much more aggressive and combatitive towards everybody but especially towards Joel. Poor Joel is having a hard time dealing with that rift, amazing acting by Pascal.

Ah, poor Joel. Dealing with a 19 year old.

Loved Catherine O'Hara!

I haven't played the game, so I'm very curious about 1) the Fireflies out for revenge and 2) the seemingly evolved Infected.

I have started to play the first game today since i can't be spoiled after the first season.

The second game seems to be larger so i believe i read that the show will need 2 seasons to cover it storywise, this may mean i'll have to hold off on playing it so as not to spoil the show for me. However the show does make alterations of course to fit the TV medium, i haven't met Ellie yet in the game and it's already quite different but the basic plot points are still there like Sarah dying during the outbreak.

Catherine O'Hara bitching about not getting the highest quality weed really annoyed me.

Lady, you live in the literal apocalypse, you're lucky to be getting anything at all.

I loved that despite Ellie being more aggressive and hard now there's still pockets of "old" silly Ellie under there. Still makes me sad to see her that way and what it does to Joel.

Even in the apocalypse you're getting ripped off if it's mostly stems and some shake. You can't smoke stems.

Never played the game. So I have no reference point. Things happened so maybe one of those is "the thing".

Starfleet beams down to the planet incognito to study this world that just so happens to be exactly like The Walking Dead. Turns out this planet is directly between the gangster planet and the western planet.

So did "the thing" happen yet?

It's only been one episode

It did happen at the start of the game

No. Looks to be soon, but not yet.
It took a while it to happen in the game, so I'm not expecting it to happen until at least the second or third episode.
They need at least a little bit of time for them to meet and start to almost trust Abby before she kills Joel. Although now that we already know that's her goal, it won't be quite as shocking as it was in the game.
I was a little surprised how drastically they changed Abby's backstory from the game. For those unaware in the game she was just a kid and was at the hospital with her dad, who was one of the Doctors that Joel killed when he saved Ellie.
Everything else was pretty close the game, the set they used for the store that Ellie fell into when she encountered the Stalker was almost an exact recreation of what it looked like in the game. The whole scene at the party was almost an exact shot for shot, line for line recreation of that scene in the game.
Catherine O'Hara's character was a great addition to the story.
They even introduced Shimmer, and now I'm curious if she'll have the same fate as she did in the game.

I think they are aiming for a good balance between sticking closely to the games for fans who have played them and love the set pieces but use the TV medium they have to expand or change things that the videogame didn't have time or money for.

Case in point - i have started to play the first game this week and the intro to it up until Sarah dies went by far too fast, the show did it much better by establishing Sarah as a character, showing her day and more conversation with Joel before shit hit the fan, which made the shock of losing her that much more impactful. The same with Frank and Bill's story - from what i read online in the game it's just a bunch of notes you can find and piece together a story but if i remember correctly that relationship went south when in the show it led to one of the most beautiful, tragic but also sweet story in recent years.
