The Confederation Timeline (Bizarro World)

I'm still not really buying the whole existence of the Confederacy because some woman with mental problems didn't go on a spaceflight to find some microbes that helped save the ozone layer or whatnot 400 years before. Since Q was actively screwing around in 2024 and hindering Picard and Co.'s attempts to get Renee on that spaceship, it seem pretty clear that this was nothing more than like when he sent Picard to that fake courtroom in the 21st century. Q ultimately created this fake timeline and had the power to erase it just as quickly. Which means that the entire need for Picard to go back in time was pointless. Q was just fucking with Picard, and ultimately didn't learn a thing from his interactions with Picard for the seven years or TNG. An utterly stupid premise and a waste of John DeLancie's talents.

I don't recall her being mentally ill. Anxiety and depression are things everyone has to deal with. For most people, this is momentary, a few days at most. For others, it's long-term. I wouldn't call that "mental problems." Maybe it's semantics, but there you go.

Given Q's powers were fading because he is dying, the story was that the Confederation timeline came to be simply because Renee did not go on the mission.

She was being tested for mental competence in order to be able to go on the spaceflight. The fact that Q was her psychologist only makes it all that more ridiculous.

Yeah, I already said that was why it happened. I'm saying that it makes no sense to me.

Going to space is a bit trickier than driving to the grocery store for a gallon of milk, so what might be an ordinary problem for you or me might get an astronaut filtered out from going to space. I actually really liked this part of S2, to be honest. Yes, Q as her psychologist was silly, but I think that had to do with him failing to "snap" her out of going to space. Remember that?

People with mental problems have had massive impacts on the world and will very much continue to do so.

This reminds me of the theory that Voyager is the reason Obama got elected. Tiny thing, huge result.

That’s irrelevant. The plot of the story was that if Renee didn’t pass a psychological test by her therapist (Q), she wouldn’t be able to go on the space flight.

Yes, indeed, Q established the rules, and then kept up the facade for Picard to go through the most recent test. He picked something that would get to Picard, like time travel, and create the circumstances for the test. The premise felt very thin, but also why the Confederacy exists with all the characters still appearing-it's meant to get to Picard for Q's test.
