"Tenet" - 2020.. Nolan's new mindbender

TikTokers already making fun of the reverse concept in the movie

Nolan has cast Pattinson to play a more dashing version of himself basically

Interesting they're releasing a new trailer for this now. Not only is it the first trailer for a theatrical movie to be released for months now, but wasn't there talk in the Wonder Woman thread that both Wonder Woman and Tenet might yet get postponed depending on how many theatres are reopened within the next two weeks?

I hate the idea that some theaters might actually reopen in a few weeks while some will probably stay closed for a long time. Watch for the return of illegal downloading if that happens. *

*Yes mods I know that is a taboo subject, and I don't condone that, but I think it's a good prediction to make if some of the country can go see big movies while other parts of the country have to still be locked down.

I know AMC, and the local company whose theaters I go have both said that they plan on opening a couple weeks before Tenet opens. so I think as long as Tenet comes out on the planned date there's a pretty good chance the vast majority of theaters will probably be open by then.

It's ridiculous to reopen anything before we have a systematic testing and tracking system in place. Any reopening that does happen will probably be reversed as soon as the next wave of infections happens. I know I'm not going to a movie theater anytime in the foreseeable future.

I was interested when there was potentially Time Travel, but since its not that I doubt I'll even catch this on home video.

God forbid someone makes a movie that SUBVERTS expectations.

You think it's going to be about time travel. Well it's apparently not going to be

There is a scientific theory that there is a mirror universe where time is running in the opposite direction of our universe. The theory seems to be that time is only moving backwards from our perspective though and if people from the other universe were to view us, then they would think we are going backwards instead. Maybe "inversion" could be a play on mirror universes. The poster is giving me that impression.

I just heard about that theory on The Daily Show. It's a fascinating idea but obviously how hard to wrap your mind around how such a thing could exist, both mechanically and philosophically. Does that mean free will doesn't exist?

But yeah, great point about Nolan often subverting expectations and how it relates to that movie poster (which has been out for awhile). Maybe Pattinson is telling it straight and the film isn't actually about time travel or even time manipulation (which, really, isn't splitting hairs).

So you're saying there's a possibility that Red Dwarf is the most scientifically accurate scifi series produced?

No, it just means it's a matter of perspective. Every decision looks predetermined if you look at it in reverse, but within the reference frame in which the decision is actually made, it hasn't happened yet and thus you have free choice to make it. The way it looks from a different frame is irrelevant to the free will of the person actually making the choice in that moment.

I didn't say anything bad about this movie in particular, just that I was slightly interested in it when I thought it had time travel but I'm not interested now. I don't have anything against this movie specifically, I just wish Nolan would make another movie like the two of his that I really like, that's all. I'm not angry that the film isn't what I kind of thought it would be, its more of an "Oh well, that's too bad" feeling.

In the trailers there have been scenes playing out in reverse, and the new trailer specifically mentions this in dialogue ("What the hell happened here?" "Hasn't happened yet.") so it seems clear that SOME form of time travel is involved.

Time reversing doesn't mean you're going back in time, it's just experiencing time in a different direction. It's only time travel in the same sense that existing in our universe is time travel because we are going forward in time.

Time reversing doesn't mean you're going back in time, it's just experiencing time in a different direction.

Reversing and going back are literally synonyms. It's the same physics, just a difference of degree. If anything, the "moving forward through a backward-moving environment" thing in the movie appears to make immensely less physical sense than jumping through a wormhole or time warp to a specific moment in the past. Okay, classically there's no preferential direction of time, and it is theoretically possible for an observer to see the shards of a glass spontaneously reassemble or a bullet fly back into the barrel of a gun. Although I'd think the law of entropy would have some objection to that.

Also, if you're perceiving time backward, wouldn't gravity work backward? The rhythm of using your leg muscles to walk would be totally inverted. And would you inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen? And how could you see anything, if the photons were leaving your eyeballs rather than going into them? There is so much that is not symmetrical.

Oh yeah, we are definitely opening up to early, but I'm not sure what exactly would be the criteria to open. The problem with what you're talking about, is that we're probably never going to have something like that with the people we have in charge now.

I was just reading an article that touched on that:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/s...olled-coronavirus-spread/ar-BB14tA7u?ocid=sf2

Basically it's getting the reproduction number R0 to fall below 1, so that each infected person is infecting less than one other person on average and the number of infected people diminishes with time.

The problem with what you're talking about, is that we're probably never going to have something like that with the people we have in charge now.

Which is why I have no intention of "opening up" anytime soon.

Which is completely understandable. I'm just trying to be optimistic that things will at least be at a point where we can go out, with precautions, by the time we hit the point where Tenet and Mulan are supposed to be coming out.
But with so much opening up now, and after seeing a video my mom found with all of the people protesting the stay at home orders, I'm scared about what's going to happen in the next few weeks. But that video also makes me think that as a species we might be better off if all of those people rush out and get sick and die.
OK, I'm obviously joking, I don't really want to see people die.

Honestly, I wouldn't put something like that past Nolan. He already did kind of do that with Momento.

Well, that's not entirely unusual. There have certainly been cases in the past where some actors don't understand what's going on in the movie they're making (not counting all of those films Connery did when he admittedly didn't know what the hell was going on) until they see the actual film.

It's not their job to know. They just need to make it look like they do.
