Keep in mind, also, that it wasn't our universe they were thrown into it. Or whether or not it was a real universe at all. We know courtesy of a certain trickster that angels have the power to create elaborate and powerful alternate worlds. I'm guessing Balthazar just happened to create this one so that it didn't allow the use of any magic.
The fact that it bears some semblance to our world is just a coincidence. But considering the show is still going fine and Misha is alive well after the airing of this episode -- or that this episode was even made -- proves that it wasn't ours.

Of course it's not our universe. In our universe, Robert Singer doesn't look like Bill Murray's brother. And The CW doesn't make its actors THAT rich.
Alt-Ruby might be the really rich one. Maybe Jared married rich...

there was a joke i enjoyed when dean or sam were talking to "robert singer" (as played by brain doyle murray) and said "if that even is your real name" which sort of broke the fourth wall of the actual episode even after having broken the fourth wall of the series to enter the 'real' universe

I'm with you. I loved that they referenced that Bobby is named after their director Robert Singer. That was classic.
A few comments...
- No one in the real world noticed that Jensen Ackles continued to use Dean's speaking voice.
- This episode was very timely considering Charlie Sheen's antics.
- I was sort of waiting for Danneel Harris to put in an appearance.

Lots of actors stay in character off-camera. I'm sure they just rolled their eyes and let it slide.
Daneel didn't feel comfortable making an appearance. Ackles has an infamous, prolonged online stalker named Stephanie Ware (well, she appropriated the name) who has insisted for years that she and Jensen are married and that the Daneel marriage is a lie. She's a disturbed woman. I can't blame Daneel for keeping a low profile . She's shy and reserved in real life, just like her husband, while Jared and Gen are outgoing and completely the opposite personality wise from Mr. and Mrs. Ackles.

though I'd love to put that label on Tennison the banning machine. She may post there. She's definitely posted at imdb, claiming Jensen isn't really married to Daneel and that she won't believe it. She's posted at youtube as well. Stephanie Ware is a real person, but it's not this person. She co-opted the name, something the real person doesn't appreciate. Jensen and Daneel are quite aware of her.
Stephanie Ware isn't exactly a one-of-a-kind name. Was there a Supernatural fan with that name who the stalker deliberately took hold of her ID?
This reminds me of the story about two classmates who didn't know each other, but one of them became a porn star, saw the other person's name in the yearbook and thought that would be a good porn name, and somehow it's ruining that real person's life.

Really? Because that happened in real life a few years ago. The lawsuit made the news and brought the story to light.

I just had a question, as I love Supernatural, but apart from watching it first on DVD, and now Season 6 on TV, I know almost nothing of the behind-the-scenes goings on etc of the show. So for example I didn't know that Jared Padalecki was married to the Ruby II actress in real life.
Anyway, there's an ongoing joke in the episode about the fact that Jensen and Jared are now talking to each other. I just wondered if that was just a joke, or did the actors really have a falling out or something and don't like one another?
