STV:TFF - How did this POS get made?!?

I think he should be more ashamed of "Justice"...

It was "high social commentary" about dealing the death penalty to people who step in flower beds...

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

That's great stuff. The stuff of epic and classic Trek.

I hereby grant this episode the Spock's Brain Award of Excellence.

I will always be grateful to "Justice" for, well, let's just say a late night viewing with a friend led to rewinding again and again the images of all those buffed guys running around and one thing led to another.....

Nah...it was just bad...and had a laughable premise.
I was looking at the half-nekkid girls in the episode, but it was still bad.

Even THEY couldn't save this dreck...and ya know...I'm not sure I've seen this one since it's original airing. Maybe once.

Come to think of it -- there's a LOT of Next Gen episodes I haven't seen since the original air date.

1 Great character moments that are the closest to the original tv series than in any other movie.

2 An intelligent Sci-Fi story that asks - What is God? What is Pain? etc.

It god a bad rap because it came out after the successful IV. It was also the first "not that great" movie since the original. So it got an unfair rep as being the worst.

I would say that Nemesis, Insurrection, possibly even Generations are worse.

Now I think it is the best character driven story, next to TWOK and TSFS. The scene with the Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Sybok in the lounge was very powerful.

This. The "I need my pain" speech still resonates with me today.

I also liked the theme of a failed journey to find "god", and musing on the idea that maybe god is something within instead of a megabeing in space. Although I appreciate that many aspects of the story were ridiculous or badly executed.

Eh, I enjoy all of them. There are no bad Trek films. Some are just less awesome than others.

^ And THAT, my friends, is the kind of reasoning that allows films like STV and tv shows like VOY and ENT to be made and the kind of attitude that got places like Disney's California Adventure opened.

I disagree with including V in that assessment, but regardless, you have to acknowledge it is also the kind of 'reasoning' (your word, but I think of it as 'fanthink') that kept TNG on the air for years until it got decent enough to attract non-fanatic normal viewers, and those fans had to almost totally suspend their critical faculties to keep watching (the same mindset you damn -- and rightly so -- for VOY and ENT.)

^The fact that TNG was given the luxury of three seasons to finally get its shit together set up similar false expectations for DS9, VOY, and ENT; Trek shows were somehow special and magically immune from being canceled after three episodes if they blew goats, unlike everything else on TV.

Well said! I saw Trek V in the theater at age 15 and thought it sucked (though it took me 3 or 4 days after the movie to admit it) and find it mind-boggling the amount of support it gets here.
We've had posts for years about how Trek V isn't that bad and how it's some people's favorites! Yikes!

It just means those of us who like TFF find beauty in it where others don't see it. Nothing wrong with that. It's a large universe. There's plenty of room.

TNG proved itself quite early on with shows like "The Big Goodbye" and "Conspiracy", but by early Season Three it was going fine.
Episodes that were the exception but not the rule. For every "Big Goodbye" or "Conspiracy," I'll give you a lame TOS rip-off like "The Naked Now," the downright embarrassing "Code of Honor," or the hamfisted moralizing of "Justice" or "Symbiosis." TNG managed to skate along for its first two seasons solely because it was Star Trek; any show with that many bad episodes in its first season would have shed viewers like a mangy dog, and probably been canceled after the initial run of 13 episodes, if not before.

That's true. I really didn't want to sound like a jerk....but I was surprised by the love for Star Trek V. I mean, I really liked TMP...I thought I was the only one who admired it then I came to this bb and wow...there are people here that could literally write a whole new book on it.

Well I think that at the time, Trek was way popular. TNG was on the air and they were on the heels of TVH. TPTB probabaly felt that they could do no wrong and that any Trek, even bad Trek, was better than no Trek at all. Hey, there was aprofit to be had.

I was actually surprised at the level of hate for the movie, when I came here. I mean there are those of us who really enjoy the movie, but as you can see, many of the people who dislike it really dislike it and have no problem insulting every fan who thinks otherwise.

I like every ST movie (and almost every episode) the first time I see it. I'll take any chance I can to get my imagination offa this rock.

Also, except for TOS, which I saw in reruns, where I got addicted, I have seen all the movies and series in real time as they were released.

That said, I did like TFF the first time I saw it. I watch these things to be entertained, not to nit pick the SFX or the canon violations (I watch them the second time for that). I was entertained.

Now in hindsight, it is clearly one of the worst, exceeded only by the hideousness of Nemesis, which AFAIK was made in a tattoo parlor (yeah, and I am old enough to have no hope of ever "getting" that esthetic).

The moment that stands out for me was Sulu's manual landing of the shuttle into the shuttle bay. Best landing ever, and a considerable SFX achievement (they used garage door lifter springs to shoot a (?6 foot) model into the set. Again, my subjective bias creeps in here. I am Sulu fan (no not for THAT reason. He was the first positive Asian role model on the screen), as well as a shuttlecraft wonk (see sigfile links). So of course, like the search for a god being I am a sucker.

But see, this is TFF, so even that gets flawed when the netting comes up in the shuttle bay to finally arrest the shuttle. Netting?!?!?!?!? In the 23rd century ?!?!?!?! Something obviously ripped off a 20th century aircraft carrier, when forcefields should have been in place. Cinematic opportunity for lots of sparks and crackles. Oh well.

Bad trek better than no trek. Believe me, I've been there.
