News Strange New Worlds casting/new characters

I like how much TOS celebrated real human diversity and showed a united earth journeying out into the unknown. Every other show has had multiple aliens on the crew, including all the ones currently coming out. Nice to see a bone thrown to TOS fans.

.why even have a nurse as a main character?
In much the same sense as it's not necessary to include all the senior staff positions in the main cast, it also isn't necessary to limit the main cast to just senior officers. Maybe they plan some sort of dynamic between the doctor and nurse and feel there's enough material there to warrant both being part of the main cast. If anything, Star Trek far too rarely develops the department's staffs besides the senior officer and maybe one other recurring character on the staff. If anything this news seems a step in the right direction to me.

Indeed, yes. It is quite tiresome to me that the only jobs on a starship that get emphasized are the higher ups.

^ Still don't understand how Kirk could possibly turn up, since we know he and Pike don't even meet face to face until Kirk takes over command of the Enterprise, and obviously it's too early for that.

The line in question was that Kirk met Pike when he was promoted to Fleet Captain. It doesn't say anything about Kirk maybe sticking around for 3 seasons afterwards. So there's no issue.

Just to add to this, the fact that Kirk says he met Pike "when he was promoted to Fleet Captain" and not "When I took command of the Enterprise from him", would suggest that the later, did not happen. So we just need Pike promoted partway through the series. And that's good fodder for drama because Pike knows his fate at that rank. However, the fact that Mendez asks the question at all implies that Kirk doesn't get assigned to the ship. But if we ignore that (we can assume Mendez never looked at Kirk's personnel record), Kirk could replace Number One as first officer. Remember, in the Mirror Universe Kirk was First Officer of the Enterprise.

He also says, "Spock served under him for several years", not "Spock and I served under him". While Pike's promotion to Fleet Captain and Kirk taking over the ship from him could be separate events, I don't think previous continuity supports them knowing each other all that well or for any length of time.

Good point, I forgot about that line. Just Mendez's question already requires stretching of cannon to make it work. You are right that the wording of the statement about Spock precludes it. Best we can hope for is Kirk aboard for one "special mission" and that happens to be the one where Pike gets promoted.

Its simple, the show doesn't need Jim Kirk in it.. We didn't see Picard fly in with the Enterprise D every other week to save DS9.. A new show, a new crew, ocasional cameo, is just great, but Pike doesn't need Kirk, or scotty, or bones. These characters are already fleshed out, its just like the Solo movie.. no one really asked for it.

I am formally asking for it.

Good. Stop giving whats asked for and just tell a good story.

I’m surprised that they are moving in the direction of another female comms officer (even if it meant to be Uhura), and so early in the series too. It really seemed like it was time for the comms officer position to be operated by a male for a change.

Ortegas was male in the draft for “The Cage”. This time, they made Ortegas female in the draft for SNW. Seems to be a completely new character we have not seen before.

La’an..I’m not opposed to an Indian/Middle Eastern character. Representation has been long overdue. This might just be Lt. Amin though, who we saw in DSC S2. But, it could be an alien, since the name reminds me of Nhan on DSC.

Biodun does sound like M’Benga. Maybe they are saving Boyce for a guest appearance later in the series? Or for a Short Trek?

Miller...not sure why a nurse is needed as a part of the main cast, but ok.

I wonder of there is a possibly that a lot of the minor characters of the Enterprise crew we saw in DSC S2 might be killed off sometime over the first season of SNW. Which would explain some of these casting decisions.

Uh.. Still a homosapiens only club eh... An andorian security officer, tellerite engineer, Coridanites, denobulan..
He'll a denobulan security female.. Oh the fun with that one!
Pair of bynars, or just 1 as a communications officer
Any of the shed load from enterprise..
Suliban, all the weird ones from the kelvin movies.. Have a alien troop like babylon 5..
Get creative!
Only the female Denobulan would be of any interest to me.

A) a female Denobulan security officer would be mighty interesting

B) we get to fill in the gaps in regards to Denobula after their introduction in ENT, and what became of them

C) there has always been male and female counterparts for the aliens in regards to the main cast of Star Trek.

- Male and female Klingons (Worf & B’Elanna Torres)
- Male & female Vulcans (Spock, Tuvok, & T’Pol)
- Male and female Bajorans (Ro, Kira and
Shaxs
)

It would make sense for there to be a female Denobulan in a new series, as a counterpart to Phlox.

I suppose Kirk's appearance could be a guest shot in which he and Pike don't meet. Be interesting to see how they go about doing that.

Technically, Kirk never met Una onscreen in TOS. So, maybe Una visits the Farragut at some point?

I'm a little confused by the idea of M'Benga potentially being part of SNW. I'd think he'd be a bit young during this time period?

I mean, there can be other black doctors on the Enterprise. It's probably M'Benga, but I wouldn't bet on it just yet.

Is the woman from Ask Not going to be the engineer? It would be weird to have a whole short to introduce her if she's not going to be on the show.

I doubt the ship's chief engineer is an Ensign fresh out of the Academy. If she's on the show, she'll be one of the engineering staff, but not the chief engineer. Besides, according to Disco season 2, the Enterprise's chief engineer is a male.
