Stargate Universe - any info?

^^ Also, who knows how it will change from concept to production. From what I remember reading, Atlantis was very different from it's initial concept.

Agreed, what we know of now is a basic plot outline and might change significantly when it gets to air. If ever.

So is the sole function of the ninth chevron, to gain access to this automated Ancient ship? And can *any* gate (Pegasus or Milky Way) get there, provided there's enough power, like from a ZPM?

It seems the 9th was a contingency chevron programmed with many functions since its active when orbital gates are used. Except for Mark III Pegasus Gates which actually lack a 9th chevron according to some episodes.

M1 - Regular ground Gate (physical prop, chevrons on front, has 9, only 8 used so far)
M2 - Orbital CGI 1 (double sided, all 9 chevrons always on)
M3 - Orbital CGI 2 (doubled sided, chevrons always on, only has 8)

So I don't know, maybe the 9th doesn't require any more power than an 8 symbol address, but needs a new command code or sequence from a remote device to allow 9. Without it the Gate may just ignore any 9 symbol address.

Atlantis has changed its focus pretty dramatically since Rising

Atlantis has a focus?

*Look at us, we're not at all like SG-1, have kewler haircuts and live on a pretty floating snowflake city and like, stuff*

Actually I'm pretty sure the Jonus part was true, but it was so long ago I don't care.

And the actor who plays McCay just showed up for the part of a new scientist that I think has nothing to do with his character at all, the complete opposite. The writers were smart enough just to keep him playing the same character.

Ship or shipS?

I'm going to assume that there is a duty of care to maintain and increase the size and concentration of the Stargate Universe by whosoever is the dominant lifeform int he galaxay. They have to feed the beast.

Now although I can seen automated construction and seeding of Stargates being handled by machines not possessing AI to any great degree... Mining Anaquada, and chosiing where to drill takes a little "humanity" or you're accidentally decimating stone age cultures living in thatched huts.

That's what I meant. The character was originally called Dr. Ingram which David Hewitt auditioned for (but apparently either didn't get it or the producers were not completely sold on him for the role). Filming on the pilot began and they needed to cast the role fast and decided that Ingram was close in concept to McKay, so they gave the character a quick name change in the "Rising" script and casted Hewitt.
