Starfleet Academy & Robert Picardo: I have a theory...

Admiral Jean-Luc Picard

The studio, streamer, producers, I feel like someone realized they might have trouble bringing the Trekkies over to Starfleet Academy, mostly aimed at the Discovery audience. I feel like Robert Picardo was brought it to be like, "Look, don't you want to see Picardo as the Doctor from Voyager? Come watch out show, come see Picardo!" I'm gonna be honest, I have no desire to see Star Trek reduced to a college show, but I'll tune in to watch Picardo.

I don't know what the creative process that led to Robert Picardo's involvement was, but it would be pretty bizarre if he wasn't being hired to hopefully lure in some Voyager fans, like how Worf was added to DS9 to get the TNG fans watching. Or how the entire cast of TNG was added to Picard to get TNG fans watching.

Personally I'm still at the point where I'll try anything official with Star Trek in the title and give it a fair chance. Even if the title also includes 'Section 31' or 'Starfleet Academy'. But if I had been on the fence, then Picardo's involvement would've definitely pushed me over to the side of giving it a shot.

I wonder if some of the other Voyager cast can pop up as holograms or something. Since Voyager ended, we've seen the ship and most of the cast pop up here and there. Harry's supposed to pop up on Lower Decks unless that epsiode's already come and gone. The only ones we haven't seen are B'Elanna, Neelix, and Kes. I feel like Neelix should have popped up in a Prodigy episode. :D

My theory is they're going to tie him into the episode "Living Witness" but hopefully it will just be a deep cut for VOY fans and not like a whole plot element. I want SFA to stand on its own!!

Hasn't it been confirmed this will be Voyager / Prodigy Doctor, not Living Witness Doctor?

On the outset, I really don't have any interest in a '90210' type of Star Trek show.
But who knows, perhaps some part of it will peak my interest and keep me watching.

Yes, thank you. Surely the comparative example would be closer to Harry Potter than 90210, since the whole point is that they're learning to do interesting things.
A group of young alien cadets thrown together in close quarters learning new things with moderate interpersonal relationships, is what we got with PRODIGY, specifically for kids to watch.

This is going to be THAT full blown in live action for adults, I'm not convinced at this point that the writers are going to leave out the 'Romance intertwined with the Drama' along with the Learning of New Things.
If it doesn't end up being similar to 90210 or any of those type of shows, then I will be surprised.
(it is one of the few TV tropes that Trek hasn't really tackled full on yet)

Like I said, I may end up enjoying it enough to continue to watch anyway, but based on my TV choices from the past, it's not something I'm looking forward too.

YMMV

I would hope that the interpersonal drama would be akin to romances of the week from previous Trek shows with a greater focus on the actual Cadet stuff.

Hey, I saw Top Gun for the first time recently! I hated it.

I'm hoping this series is nothing like I imagine it to be. Not Top Gun, not Harry Potter, not Buffy the Vampire Slayer, not The First Duty, not the FMV video game from the '90s, not that pitch for an academy movie starring Kirk and Spock, not the comic books. Not that episode of Stargate SG-1 that mocked spin-offs like this. It has to completely subvert all my expectations without subverting Star Trek or else it's not going to work for me.
