Glue on a little Firefly, There are Federation core worlds where everything is fantastic, but outside this core the majority of the Federation is more getting by. Varies significantly from planet to planet.

That reminds me of this picture of a crappy run-down space colony similar to the infamous Kowloon Walled City (I even wrote a song about it):

If a space station grew over time, centuries perhaps, then something like Kowloon might be the way it would look. Especially if different species came and went, each employing their own architecture and priorities to additions.

That was one of the earlier premises for DS9, it's a shame they didn't go don that route as it would've been really interesting to see both visually (not that I don't love the station we got) and from a story-telling side of things.

I'm not sure how interested I'd be interested in the Nyberrite Alliance, but the general idea of doing a Star Trek not centered around Starfleet has piqued my interest a time or two over the years. There's the Federation Science Bureau from TWOK that's always intrigued me. Who are they? What do they do besides 'cook' planets? And if it wasn't for Scotty's line about the MACO's being disbanded, I'd be up for a show centered around a MACO group. Starfleet Marines?
